X-Terra 70 vs. Whites MXT

detecto

New member
New to the forum and still somewhat of a novice hunter. I've been using an old Whites Classic III Coinmaster and have decided to get a new machine with target ID. and depth ID. I live in Ohio and mainly hunt coins but would like to branch out and do some relic and possibly some gold hunting. I've narrowed my search to the X-Terra 70 and the Whites MXT both for simplicity of use, cost and their ability to find targets. I'm sitting on the fence and I'm looking for the push to send me in one clear direction. I hope I can get some guidance from you seasoned veterans. Thanks in advance......

Well I cant tell you much about the MXT as I have never used one myself but I can tell you about the X-Terra 70 and where I detect with it. BTW this question has been asked a few times just to let you know. Firstly at the top of this forum is alot of info on the X-Terra 30, 50 and 70 which is a VERY GOOD read and will give you some insight into the X-Terra series, video footage included .
Ok when I can get the chance be it my other half lets me or weather permitting I go prospecting from time to time. Due to the limited time I have on the fields I don't have alot of gold to show for it but I have found small quartz species. With the elliptical DD coil the 70 is very sensitive on small gold and handles hot ground quite well. I use the prospect mode on beaches not only in the gold fields with good results. Everyone wants to know how deep a detector will go, you wont have any issues here with the 70 as she will do her best to sniff out deep targets with pleasing results. Because of the unique design by minelabs frequency system the 70 becomes quite a versatile machine for all kinds of detecting. I love the lightness and balance of the 70 and the power consumption is amazing. Whether you are a novice or an advanced user the 70 will provide you with what you need. Lately I have been using my new 6" DD 18.75 kHz coil in shallow creeks and am having a blast with it, great little coil. The only suggestion I make to you and others is to try the 70 and the MXT out and see which one you like the best if you can.
Cheers!

Never used the MXT, but the last machine I had was the DFX and I had 5 other White's and thought I would never switch brands. I jumped into an Explorer XS because I was always curious of that beast. It was too heavy and I didn't like the display so I traded even for an X-70. Simple, light and deep are the main attributes and it has an easy to see display. I like the option of chosing the frequency you want to hunt in just by changing coils. I believe the MXT runs in 13 kHz, which is geared more towards gold but I'm sure it does a good job on relics and such from what I hear.

I just don't know enough about the MXT to compare the two and I'm sure if you went to the MXT Forum, folks there would sing the praises of the machine just like we do about the X-Terras. Buy one and if you don't like it, trade it for another. I do know you'll be happy with the X-70, I never heard or read a bad thing about it. Just my 2 cents and usual rambling and I'm not trying to sway you one way or the other. Ron

Right off the bat I can tell you the XT70 is more than one pound lighter. Also the XT70 has notch accept and reject for the full range. The MXT limits you to one frequency. The XT70 has three. For just casual hunting the 7.5 kHz would be all you need anyway. But you have the option of the 18.75 kHz for nugget hunting. For me the first two reasons alone is enough to recommend the XT70.

Two words. Notching and weight.

Imagine finding nickles without pull tabs. That's possible with the XT70 and not the MXT. This is a big deal. If you want to get rid of pull tabs on the MXT, by default you lose the nickles.

Second, weight. The difference in weight over a few hours of hunting is really a bonus.

Stop thinking about it. Get the XT70 and you won't look back.

I too narrowed it down the MTX, & but mine was the 50.I chose the 50 instead mainly for the lightwieghtness of it,different freqs.,notching and manual GB that the MXT does not have.
I watched the MXT DVD and the 50 on youtube, read, talked to people.Everyone has thier takes on both machines, both are good.I felt the 50 was the all around better deal.
I dont have it anymore thought,I sent it back to get the 70 because it has more options than the 50 and MXT and I think I'll really like it.

I would have went to a place and tried them out but there are no MD places at a reasonable distance, especially a Minelab dealer.

I have had the MXT, now I use the Xterra 70. One word, DEPTH!! The Mxt would not ID anything non ferrous after the 6-7 inch level. The Xterra 70 will.
I have found CW 3 ringer bullets at 10-12 inches with the 70 and the 10.5 7.5kHz DD Coil.

I have used both of them. In my opinion, the X-70 is hands down the better choice. It weighs less, which means I can hunt longer, and is much more versitle than the MXT.

I have owned a MXT for two years and traded it for a X-70. I would never go back to the MXT. The X-70 is lighter and will ID gold nuggets far deeper than the MXT. The X-70 is a great coin and relic detector also. I was in Alaska last year with some guys that had MXT's and my X-70 would ID deep targets when the MXT would not. The X-70 is a super machine.

I had a M6 and it was a really good detector. But I missed the notching ability that some of my other detectors had. Plus the M6 is heavy. The MXT is even more heavy. So I sold it and bought an XT50. The 50 was way better than the M6. To then I traded the 50 for a 70. I only have about 4 hours on the XT70 but all I can say is WOW! I don't know why you would want for any other detector if you got a XT70. I got one heck of a deal from Chuck at Indian Nations Detectors. They are also a sponsor of this site. Give him a call.

I [size=medium]narrowed my search to the MXT and XT 70. Decided to go with XT 70. Any good used ones out there please PM me. I am ready to buy.

I would buy one new. The Minelab warranties are not transferable. If you making that kind of investment for a detector that will be with you for years then buy a new one. As I understand it ML runs some specials until gone. I think Indian Nations has just a few left with a free 2 year extension to the ML 2 year warranty. This is about a $100 extra for free. Write Chuck from http://www.indiannationsdetectors.com for the details. He answered all my emails even on Sundays. I can't say enough about the deal I got!

I had an MXT (found a lot of gold 'n stuff with it) and sold it, getting an X70. Still have the 70 and, for coins it's the superior machine. I like the all-metal mode on the MXT more, due to the SAT and ID functions, but the 70 is probably a bit more sensitive and the iron mask is a nice feature. It's definitely a more flexible detector with better options. ..Willy.

Many thanks to all who responded. I've decided on the Minelab X-terra 70. Got the the 6" , 18.75 kHz coil, the lower shaft, 2 year extended warranty, detector bag and the control housing cover. Should have it by Wednesday, unfortunately the ground is frozen now. Thanks again for all the help....Joel

Lower rod came with the coil. I've found that most of the Internet dealers are unloading their Minelab promotional items because they can no longer give it away in packages unless sponsored by Minelab. The current promotional is the detector bag and the 5x10 elliptical coil (don't think it's waterproof).
