X-Terra 70 vs Fisher F-75

X-Terra 70 vs Fisher F-75. Hello, I am new, this is my first post. Has this comparison been already done before on this forum? If so, who was the overall winner. If not, can someone who knows anything compare the two as to the best one all around please. I saw the 70 was the overall winner over the MXT on one thread here, Thank You, David!

Have you all read this about the 70 yet, it is very good.

if you are afetr pure depth i personally think the f75 will win hands down..its response time is lightning fast too..HOWEVER...as a multipurpose machine, the xterra will kill the f75,by virtue of its coil selections, its a better choice for the casual or more serious gold prospector(yes the f75 can find gold, but then can so a lot of machines, just by virtue of the 18.5 khz coils for the xt 70,being better on gold than 13khz)...there are other points for both others will point out,in the end it will come down to your own personal preference and use for any machine :)

Sorry, can't agree with the above post. I have an F75 and an Xterra 70 and if you compare depth with like coils (10.5DD vs. standard F75 coil), the Xterra is deeper. And the Xterra is stable in all metal, whereas the F75 is not, unless you lower the sensitivity waaaay down. I don't own stock in either company, so I don't care which one is deeper. But the 70 is. But the F75 is a better machine than the reviews it's been getting. Just gotta learn to use it. And I'll agree it is really fast between targets. But the Xterra 70 is no slouch in that department either. And of course there is no comparison in the quality of construction. None at all.

Thank you, looks as if the XT 70 is better than the F-75. Also looks as if the XT 70 is better than both the F-75 and MXT. I have a good feeling that the XT 70 IS the best all round metal detector on the market and only the Explorer SE has better discrimination(I owned a Garrett GTI 2500 and hated it and the DFX is heavy like the MXT) and only the SD-GP series are better gold units with the Infinium LS specialized and the Lobo has no VDI scale and no tracking in discriminate. If a person DOES want the best all round unit on the market, I DO think the XT 70 IS IT ! And look at it's super lightness as well !

Which detector are you using now David? HH Dennis in Idaho[quote David]Thank you, looks as if the XT 70 is better than the F-75. Also looks as if the XT 70 is better than both the F-75 and MXT. It is the most intelligent detector in the VLF class which I have ever used. Bar 1 thing, on the ground it is clumsy and forever wants to fall over.
I know you can glue or clip on side feet etc etc but I need mine to be as streamlined as I can get it, I go scrub a lot so it stays clumsy in that regard, suits me. Otherwise it is a killer. I cant believe what was in the minds though of the designers of the F75?? The coil! Why would you angle the spokes inwards?
Wouldnt common sense dictate that you angle them outwards to deflect sticks and so on rather than inwards which would draw them towards you and the coil centre?

Dennis, I only have a Minelab GP gold machine now and I have no coin machine. That is why I am doing the research to find out the best one for me. I think it will be the XT 70 or the Explorer SE that I have come to the conclusion are the ones, with all the research and listening to opinions, thanks to all !

I had a MXT, but the threshold and weight caused me to look elsewhere. Out comes the F-75 and I bought one about a year ago now. The MXT stayed in the corner all summer, then a gold hunting trip came up. I bought the F-75 because it was supposed to be a good nugget machine, but there were no reviews and I didn't want to get skunked and I was spoiled by the light weight F-75 so I traded my MXT for an XT-70 with a six inch HF coil.

We'll another guy with a MXT got the first gold. It was soooo tiny I was amazed and sad I sold my MXT until I hit an even smaller nugget with my XT-70. Long story short, I took one of the small nuggets I found with the XT-70 and with the other gold hunters around to insure a fair test I tried my F-75 on the last day by laying the nugget on the ground. I like the fast swing and the larger 11" footprint of the F-75 to cover more ground and everyone agreed the F-75 was equal to or deeper than the XT-70 so I used the F-75 and doubled my take of the other days with the F-75. Both machines were running as hot as could be.

I do like the balance of the F-75 better than the XT-70 so once I returned from nugget shooting the XT-70 stayed in the corner as a back up until I sent my F-75 in for the upgrade. During the time my F-75 was away there was snow on the ground so I couldn't use either machine. When the F-75 was returned a trip to the coast availed itself and I took both machines. The F-75 falsed in the wet sand and was as noisy as can be. Something wrong with the coil or something so I switched to the XT-70 with the stock coil. I couldn't remember how to get into beach mode so I picked a pattern, auto ground balanced and away I went. Didn't find much of anything, but the XT-70 was quiet and stable. Later discovered a loose connection on the F-75 and threw some coins down to try it out. Like the MXT, coins didn't lock on but came within a small range. I tried the same with the XT-70 and kaboom, the XT-70 locked on each coin without any movement at all. A solid 30 on a penny instead of a range on the F-75. I was impressed. Now this is MDing!

Unfortunately, the quick fix on the F-75 didn't last and I had to send it back to repair :( I still don't have much time on the XT-70, but the snow is gone and I'm getting out some now. The more I use the F-75, the more I'm liking the XT-70. Granted, there is a coil or something problem with the F-75 and I expect it will come back good as new, but quality control seems to be a problem with the F-75. It ticks me that I had to send it back to repair right after getting it back with a clean bill of health. Others report the same thing.

Now to your question. I like the balance of the F-75 better. I like the fast swing rate of the F-75 better. I like the 5 year guarantee of the F-75 better. The F-75 is fast, fast, fast and works well in trash even with the big 11" DD coil. I feel the F-75 is just as good if not better than the XT-70 nugget shooting. The batteries on the F-75 last forever. Even in the limited time running the XT-70 I've changed batteries twice and the F-75 is still on the third set after a year.

That said, I'll be buying a new small coil for the XT-70 before I buy a small coil for the F-75 because of quality issues. My MXT never had a problem, you never read about MXT's having problems. The X-Terra series had some issues early on if I recall correctly, but you don't read much about quality control problems lately. The F-75 however is burdened by love/hate comments. You read where some just love their problem free F-75 or hate their problem ridden F-75. I'm not a very handy man. I like to turn something on... my car, computer, phone, radio, metal detector or what ever and it just works time after time after time.

I don't mind paying extra for quality which is why I chose the F-75 (top of the fisher line) and the XT-70. I mostly coin shoot and once in a while nugget shoot and if I had a problem free F-75 others talk about I would choose it over the XT-70 any day because of my personal MDing style and qualities mentioned above, but until that time I'm investing in more coils for my XT-70 which I'm liking more and more the more I use it. The XT-70 also breaks down into a airline carry on (the F-75 is just a little to big) bag so the XT-70 will be traveling with me whenever I fly (which I do a lot). I don't like to check my expensive machines the way bags are "lost" by the airlines these days.

Right now, because of poor quality control I would say go with the XT-70. However, if Fisher can put out consistent quality F-75's, that will be the machine to beat in the future.

Hope this helps with your choice.

HH

Mark

David, You won't go wrong with the XT-70. It is an awesome coin machine. I enjoy mine and love its light weight. You can swing it all day. Good luck with your decision. I'd say that was a very good and fair report Mark,I remember reading a review of an Aprila Italian motorbike years ago,the reviewer said that when it worked it was the best thing on two wheels.....but mostly you had to push it home lol

WOW, thanks Idaho--Marke, that was a great write up ! It does help ! I do not think any of the 2 machines are a great deal better than the other and the F-75 is very good with the bugs worked out. You are suppose to use the optional DD coil(s) for the XT-70 for prospecting and do not use the concentric coil. The XT-70 has the best lock on, on the VDI numbers. But better battery life on the F-75. It is hard to make a decision and if the XT-70 did not exist the F-75 would be a top choice but I think I would go with the XT-70.

For the best surgical discrimination to differetiate between old and new pennies, etc., the Explorer SE is the best of all detectors on the market today for coins and jewlery. Only thing it is heavy, hard to learn, and not good for prospecting I have heard. Otherwise it is THE best for coins and jewlery. The XT-70 is very lightweight, easy to learn, and very good for prospecting and packs up small for an airline carry on but has just a straight VDI discrimination like the rest on the market and not highly advanced and precise like the Explorer SE with 2 sets of numbers.

Thanks also Dennis in Idaho, yes a good choice on the XT-70 for sure !

Great feedback Mark. Sounds really interesting the part about gold. I swing a Terra 70 for gold here in Australia and its a little Trojan. I would love to have a slash on a F75 to compare over here but Fisher in Australia are dead in the water. They once were going to send one for me to try and do a field report on and expected me to do so within 1 week. Thats 1 week. No way, I told them I would have to have at least 1 month on it to truly get an honest opinion and feel for it and to get to know it properly. They then gave me the flick and I never heard from them again. I think they expected me to bury a few dufus lame non reality targets in a test bed, wave it over them and go "gee, thats wonderful, heres your machine back and heres the report for the magazine for you to make a squillion out of for zilch". Yeah right! All they had to do was leave it with me for 1 measly month, no big deal or loss on their part.
Strange crew. But great report from yourself. Good one.

The XT-70 has been the best all round detector now for some time............its just taken along time for people to start realizing this. We should all be grateful to have so many companies making great machines which give each other competition and brings us machines like the XT-70.
Cheers!
