X-Terra 70 or MXT for Relics

Prospector

New member
I know this is a Minelab forum, but I also know that a lot of you guys have experience with both machines. Does the X-Terra have the same depth capabilities as the MXT, and is it good to use for Civil War Relic hunting. Some honest opions would be appreciated.

With he 10.5DD 7.5 Freq.Coil the Depth Great and better in Iron Site then MXT and more stable. The use other coil you can hunt any ground , from soil from sandy to worse ground you can find , Plus with the adjustable Manual Ground Balance and Auto Ground balance and full time tracking, You can hunt with very stable machine. I went from a MXT to the Xterra 70. The MXT seemed like it could not get past the 8" mark, even with the stock coil. I tried the "Super 12" and it was "OK"b but the weight of the set up was terrible!! I got my Xterra 70, went out to my "Beat To Death" CW camp and started finding targets the I had missed with the MXT. I was finding so much that my hunting partner, who had a MXT also went that next week and bought a Xterra 70. Now we both use the 10.5 DD 7.5kHz medium freq coil. No problems at finding targets at 10-12 inches. Now they are not real strong signals, but better than the MXT going from low to high tones at 6". The MXT will detect deep, but only will give a low tone until you remove soil and check the hole, then it will hight tone if the target is brass or lead...............Mark

I sold my MXT and got a X-70 last year. When I was in Alaska hunting gold with some other guys with MXT's with the super 12" coil, I could ID the targets as deep as they could read targets. The MXT's would not ID deep targets. One guy had a deep target and had me check it out with my X-70 with the 10 1/2" 7.5 khz DD coil. I always hunt in the prospect mode and switch to coin mode to get a TID reading. I got a solid 30 reading on this deep target so the other guy started digging. I went over this target several different ways and still a 30 reading. When he finally dug down about 18" ( I measured it with my pick handle) it was a solid 4 oz. nugget. He thought that he would sell his MXT and get a X-70.

Hi Steve, when you were up in Alaska how many in your group were using the XT-70 and how many were using the MXT? HH Dennis in Idaho

I used a MXT that belonged to a friend.1850ish home site. I found some deep iron objects and two wheat cents with the MXt......Worked area for 3 hours.

Update: took my Xterra 70 to same home site..2 hours and 45 minutes found 5 silver dimes, mercs . 1 v nickle no date. two barber dimes 1903 (Both) and metal toy tractor.....31 Wheat cents.......12 memorial.. I had no experience with the Xterra 70.....I had no experience with the MXT... I hunted the basic same areas I hunted with the MXT and found all the coins in an area of the back yard....Items were 8 to 12 inches in the ground....even memorials were over 8 inches.
The MXt did not hit on the targets at all...This hunt happened in August 2007 very dry land..the MXt hunt happened in Early June and the ground was very wet and soggy...Don't know if this made the difference or not, but thats the way it happened.. MXT did not do well and demonstrated lack of depth..Deepest Mxt coin was close to 6 inches deep..deepest big iron object close to 18 inches....blade part of a hoe.... Who knows..just glad I did not buy an MXT

What settings do I used to relic hunt with my X Terra 70. I live in VA.

Can you also tell me what kind of coil do I used. I have the 2 that came with the detector and I brought a DD 5" 18 feq one.

Thanks:
