x terra 70 on the Goldfields

Here is a link from FAQ http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,795126,795126#msg-795126 The 70 picks up pretty small gold!

Adelaide Hills (South Australia) - Finding some nice little pieces running the Xterra with an 11"DD, doing a test on the finds with an SD2200 and the pieces are that small it has trouble 'hearing' them. A lot quieter than Victoria but a lot less opportunity site-wise - still limited to the three designated areas but have managed to get on a private property - lots of 'relics' (horse shoes, boot nails, buttons etc.) For those who have yet to try the Adelaide Hills, especially the Mt Crawford area, there is a lot of blank rifle cartridges lying around from the areas the Army has used for training. The majority are black plastic 7.62mm with an alloy base or 5.556mm brass - both blanks. Good hunting.

I just got in a new area and the hotrocks are everywhere beeping on my X-70, in Prospecting Mode with Iron Mask at 5. For some reason I did not turn the Iron Mask UP to see if it would elliminate hot rocks but instead I hunted in C & J Mode, as the numerous hot rocks all showed up as -8 so I blanked(notched) out -8 with the sensivity at max 30 and it worked fine. (Some say the hot rocks come up as +48 also but I did not experience that at this spot). Less depth in C & J Mode but works very quiet over the hot rocks then. I wonder if I turned up the Iron Mask much higher in Prospecting Mode, would that elliminate the hot rocks also, does anyone know ??? (Yes I already know I will lose very small nuggets with the Iron Mask up high.)

tried again in a gold bearing area DD eleptical coil forget about this machine in the goldfields it is as noisy as the cheapest detectors i tried all settings the lot. so to minelab don`t advertise this machine to handle hot conditions what a load of crap. and to my earlier posts i have nutted this machine out but it is useless in goldfields (whats that i can`t hear you there`s too much noise)

Yes on Prospecting Mode you are right, on my X-70(maybe the Off-Set Tracking on the X-705 works better?) that is exactly why I hunted in the C & J Mode instead with Sensitity at 30 because that way it is quiet in the silver and gold fields. If you do not want a heavy and cumbersome Minelab SD, GP, and GPX unit and instead want a small lightweight machine for the goldfields that is quieter. Get a Garrett Infinium LS or Whites Pulse Scan TDI.
