x-terra 70 on gold

hey, got some of that alaskan gold dirt, pretty cool. but I was wondering why gold registers real low on the metal detector like in the iron range (about 10) copper comes in at 32. another thing is that theres about 1&1/2 grams of gold in a vial and in regular mode I have to pass it very close to the coil to get a response about 2-3 inches while in prospecting mode its about 3-5 and the 18 hrz coil doesn't seem to be any better. I also have a nugget that weighs probably about 2/3 of a gram and i get the same results with that. the stuff is supposed to be around 22 karat so shouldnt my detector pick it up better?

Different nuggets seem to give a very different response depending on which angle the detector coil approaches the gold.
The same applies to clumps of fine gold too. Prospecting Mode is also more sensitive that Coin/Relic mode when searching for gold.

Sure, the DD HF coils are essential for looking for gold in mineralized soils, but the smaller 6" coil is MUCH more sensitive to the smaller stuff than the Elliptical.

Some prospectors here say that gold is pretty much anywhere from 4 ... 8 ... 10 on their coils.... yet gold coins and gold jewellery tend to register higher on the TID... like 22
on their TID because of the addition of other metals (nickel, copper & zinc)

Here's a graphic I made a little while ago showing the different signal TIDs I got when approaching a nugget from different angles with the same coil.
Note that there was no reading at all from one angle. It depends on the shape and angle of your approach. Vials of gold have water and a unique shape that would probably
give any detector a chance to return an unusual target signature.

In the field I have seen gold register between a low of 6 to a high of 28, thereabouts.
Different impurities and so on will and can cause this diff. Also it can be dependent on the amount or type of mineralisation encountered.
Air tests mean zip. What you look for is in the ground not the air. Without ground to read all you will find out from an air test is that your batts are ok.
Gold is the hardest of all metals to accurately id in nugget form as shapes, minerals, impurities and so on all throw a spanner in the works of even the best disc machine money can buy.
