X-Terra 70, how much depth

Degries

New member
I am thinking about getting my wife the X-Terra 70. She currently uses a White's XLT but it gets heavy for her after a while of hunting.
The X-Terra 70 at 2.9lbs I think would be a good choice for her but I was wondering what kind of depth it gets. With the XLT she uses the Black Max
5.3 coil because it's lighter but at best it only gets about 5-6" in the ground.

I reckon the 70 is up there with the best of them for depth. I have never had a complaint or reason to with mine. I use it for gold hunting, coins and relics and its always put a smile on the dial at days end. Nugget on this forum once called it a "real little fighter", true words.
Super light, top of the heap performance, great depth and amazing versatility. Id back mine against any other VLF on the market.

Thanks for the reply. Knowing Minelab's reputation I would think that it would be a great detector. I use the Explorer ll and I wouldn't
trade it for any other. There are some good buys on the Terra series right now and I probably will be ordering one in the next day or two. I know my wife gets disappointed when I go over and area she been and pull out coins that the XLT missed. I think the X-70 will get her some of the deeper coins and be light enough for her to use all day long.

Hi everyone,I am about to purchase the x-terra70. Discovered this wonderful site BUT after looking at faq I was totally confused. It would take sooo long to find what I need to know, so please help.
Which coil for the beach? Do I need headphones..re wave noises etc...if so what type? Can see there is going to be some learning to do!!
I detect for gold but decided I would like to detect beaches, parks etc during the hot summer months.but thought this would also be a good back-up for the goldfields!
Are there many ladies on this site?
I am off to the city tomorrow & back Monday so I thankyou & look forward to replys.

cheers,
Kath

No complaints about depth here and for whats its worth the Xterra 70 never stops amazing me every time I take it out for a bush bash. The 70 will definitely surprise you in many ways........as a matter of fact don't be surprised if your wife wont let you have a go of her new 70, there's probably a good reason for that!
Cheers!

Hi Kathy! Hope that helped.

G,day Kath,I'm also from W.A but have only had my 70 for a few weeks so haven't got much in the way of experience with it myself. However what I've found so far is that the people in this forum are willing to pass on their experience and knowledge and encourage you to ask questions.Go to the X 70section of FAQ and check out the 70 video,if I had found it sooner than I did ,it would have saved a lot of re-reading sections of the instruction book.I am currently following advice given to me, and am trying to get familiar with the detector around the garden with various coins and types of metal .As you say there is a lot to learn.
Good luck with everything .Sparkie.

I have been detecting for 6 years now, mostly for 1700 - 1800's coins. I think the deepest coin I have found was at 11", that was the exception to the rule and it was with my DFX. Most of what I find is in the 4-6" range. What I'm getting at is, depth isn't everything unless you are a relic hunter. A good machine will give you a good reading at depths to 12" and the Explorer series can do that, but they are very heavy. The X-Terras are very light and will give you a solid reading at the depths most coins are found in my neck of the woods. They are also a little simpler to use than the XLT - DFX's. They are a truely turn-on-and-go machine which you can swing all day easily. It has a large display, enough coils to cover most ground and are affordable. What more could you ask? Ron

Will I went ahead and ordered the X-Terra 70 today, should have it in a few days.
I think the wife should be happy with it, if not I will have a backup to my Explorer ll.

Your right about that, it always seems to surprise me too after all this time running one. I was out on Monday and just got into "the zone" started finding targets, two were gold with one a 2g gold crystal, wrapt as the 2g was easy 7 inches down from ground level inside a lump of quartz. Crystal gold always bangs in harder than the usual stuff. Then I get a call on the phone, just as im getting really arced up "dogs been bitten by a brownie" (thats a king brown snake for our US readers and not a rabbid little girl scout) so switch off the Terra and dash home. Staffie got nailed twice on the face by it but managed to bite it in half so exacted a bit of revenge, the misses finished it off with a chain. $400 Aussie dollars later and he,s playing tug of war again that night.
If the weathers right, ill see if I can get back into "the zone" tommorow, but whats the bet I cant pull 1 more signal there all day!

Staffie's and cattle dog's are my favourite K9's. Your staffie is lucky you're finding all that gold B.T to help pay for that $400 bill .
Cheers!

G'day Kath.
Welcome on board the forum.
Beach hunting will be a great way to get to know your detector. I swing the 30, so I won't be able to give too much knowledge on the 70. The coil it came with will be fine for beach hunting. If you are keen on using it for nugget hunting, then the 5x10 elliptical DD coil will be the coil you'll want (this coil is not water proof though).
Using headphones will be of help to you if you get a really deep target (9 or 10 inches) as the audio can be hard to hear on these targets. If you are hunting near other beach goers, then it will be less intrusive. I don't get to beaches to often, but prefer to hunt them around sundown. Any brand of head phones that cover your ears that you like, would be the best choice of head phones for you. Just remember to buy a quarter inch socket adapter as most headphones come with an 8th inch socket as standard. I generally hunt without them.
If you buy a sand scoop from your local detecting store, it will make finding targets really easy.
Good luck.
Mick Evans.

No offence B.T!
Cheers!

Well the X-Terra 70 arrived a couple of days ago and I can say the wife is happy with it. This is a great light weight detector. She is already hitting coins with no problem in the 7-8" range, This is better then she has done with the XLT. I don't think it will be long before she starts finding some silver with it. The down side is she likes it so much that I haven't been able to get it out of her hands long enough for me to try it out.

Hi Pinpointa, I have a good idea where you are! Do you detect for nuggets & also relics etc with an x-terra70?
Have not read too many posts yet!! HOPE to order mine tomorrow...Have a 4000 also.
cheers
Kath

Well i did go for nuggets when i had the 2100 but dont bother now and for relics not really i am a bit picky now to what i look for. But make sure you get a cover for your screen and i seal it along the bottom edge with double sided tape to make sure the sand does not get on to the screen. And also i have cut a hole where the battery door is so you dont have to take the cover off to replace your batteries. Hope this helps Regards Pinpointa.:clapping:
