X-Terra 505 questions

New member
Hi folks,

I'm new to this hobby and just purchased a 505 for myself I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a list of the types of metals that are represented by the numerical display. I'm realize matching an exact number to a particular metal object may be impossible instead I was hoping for something like pennies register 27-33 and so on.

Try the faqfaq at top of forum posts..They may be the same as X50..but I am not positive Sir..

Another question if you don't mind. Since I'm starting out would you people recommend leaving the factory settings and just dig every signal I find if not what is the criteria in determining whether to dig a target?

Take a stroll through the FAQFAQ section. I wrote an article a few years ago about each of the three earlier models. The new one's haven't been out long enough to write more articles. But if you take a look at the ones posted for the X-50 and X-70, you will get a good basis for using the 505. Here is a link to the one for the X-50.

and one for the X-70

Thanks Digger

I found your article shortly after my last post. It was informative and I'm going to attempt to apply your techniques today. The only thing I'm not clear on is ground balancing the unit.

the thing to listen for in GB'ing the detector is a blended tone. Let's take a look at the process............... Noise Cancel to minimize interference........ all metal mode to determine a spot where there are no targets to interfere with the GB process..... lower sensitivity to mid-range.....................volume high.....................press GB button......................... while bobbing the coil up and down, (6-inches is enought) be careful to not actually bump the ground on the way down. IF the tone gets higher pitched as it nears the ground, use the - button. If the tone gets lower as you near the ground, use the + button. Somewhere in there will be a setting that gives you a blended tone. In other words, a tone that doesn't dramatically increase or decrease in pitch, as the coil bobs up and down. That is a good GB for that particular piece of ground. Go to hunt mode............... switch to menu and raise Sensitivity to a point that barely chatters when you sweep the coil, then back it off to a point where you can tolerate it. A little noise is not a bad thing. HH Randy
