X-Terra 50 ID bounces

George (MN)

New member
How do you tell when to dig? I planted a copper penny 4 1/2" deep & it bounced as low as -3 with drops into pulltab region common. Tried a couple of my other detectors & bounces were less extreme. Daniel Tn also reported these big bounces & wondering if the rest of you get them? Just trying to determine if the detector is defective or if I could be doing something wrong or if it just hates my soil.

If you are hunting in the typical trashy park, what usable info do you get from the visual ID? The options are dig everything (I won't), miss lots of coins, or in some way compromise. Do you dig if the average ID is above a certain number? Do you go by how low or high the bounces go?

If anyone has any tips on how to tell when to dig that are in between dig everything or only dig ID locks, please share what you have learned. Thanks! HH, George (MN)

I have burried some coins in my back yard Last month as well. Some things I did not take into account when doing so were.,,,,Close power//phone lines.../:thumbdown://and the fact that my GrandSon used to use my back yard for BB//Pellet gun practice.:veryangry:......Now if I can read some of my 4 inch coins and under....Some bounce around because I forgot to pick all the bb//pellets out of the ground in the path where I burried my coins.:rage:
I burried 3 Qs, 5 dimes,a 2 cent,2 IHs,2 reg.cents,and 2 gold rings.
Out of the 3 quarters I buried .....2 @6" on edge 1 @ 9" flat...I can not find even one..I can get a peep from the 9" flat in all metal that reads -6///-9....No peep on the 2 I have on edge at all....All the others I am having simular problem with...except my 2 gold rings I burried 2,and 3 inches and close to the House,,,(far away from powerlines....
My 3 problems that I beleive I am having finding or correctly IDing these are...(1) Not enough time in the ground (2) Too close to Power/phone lines, and (3)Pellets and BB's from my Grandson are all over my yard !:ranting:
My Xterra will pick up good targets ....I just choose to not dig ANYTHING that jumps more than about 8 numbers....Say I Get a hit @40,,,36,,42,,38,42.....I dig....36,,32,,34,,38...I dig even tho I know it is most likely a dang cent.....If it jumps 30,,32,,28,,20,,22...I do not dig ..............Just Me,,,Maybe someone else can give some imput....>H.H.

I am not pleased with my test garden. I have had it down over a year but it is an area where we did target practise. The Thom Dankowski video explains a good way to put down a test garden. He uses coins found and keeps the halo intact. These are then put into the side of a hole keeping the ground above the coin undisturbed. He adds salt water to the hole in an effort to bond the coin halo to the soil above the coin. Looks like I'm going to redo my test garden for the third time. I'm going to get it right this time after I clean out all the BB's. Some of my bouncing may be due to the BB's.

I just dig everything that registers -3 upwards, its suprising how the numbers can change once you start getting closer to the find.:ukflag:

George, I have to wonder if you maybe have your sensitivity too high, or there is a problem with RFI. I have LOTS of hours on my X-50, and don't have problems with numbers jumping on coins. It does jump around on other targets. But coins are usually within a couple notches. Here is an article I posted last winter with some of my thoughts on the X-30 and X-50. What to look for when coinhunting. HH

X-Terra 30 and X-Terra 50: Tips for the Coin-$hooter
This isn't the Holy Grail of X-Terra coin-shooting. It is just some documented thoughts and tips from a guy who uses the X-Terras.

Both the X-Terra 30 and the X-Terra 50 offer single frequency technology, multiple audio tones, adjustable notch discrimination, pinpointing mode, all-metal mode, a large LCD panel, adjustable sensitivity and separate adjustable volume settings for speaker or headphones. Although the notch segments, audio tones and ground balance differ between the two models, both offer the same basic functionality. The fixed ground balance on the X-30 is set to provide adequate operation in most types of soil. The adjustable ground balance on the X-50 allows the user to adjust the ground balance to operate smoothly in most every hunting environment. Ground balance settings apply to all hunting modes of the X-Terra 50. Proper ground balance will minimize false signals caused by ground mineralization and maximize the ability to provide accurate target identification. To properly adjust the X-50 for the site you are hunting, set the detector to the all-metal mode and find an area of ground that is clear of any metal. Before making any adjustment to the ground balance, temporarily adjust the sensitivity down to a level in the single digits. Sensitivity is the detector
