I have used the X-50 in the local park. Which, by the way, I have nicknamed Pulltab park. It is an old Chautauqua park that has been at the same site for about 130 years. During the past 35 years, it has been "modified" with a new sports complex, pool, tennis courts, parking lot etc. However, we still manage to get some good coins out of there occassionally. When we find one, it isn't as deep as some might think. My brother pulled an old Barber dime out at 5-inches just a few weeks ago. As I have said before, I believe that most of the old coins left lurking in the ground are still there due to being masked by adjacent trash, not because of extreme depth. At least in this neck of the woods. The trick with any good detector is to learn the subtle sounds of the keepers vs the trash and separate those targets. The X-50 is no exception.
I will admit that the X-50 and 9-inch coil is not my favorite combination at extremely trashy areas. But that is not due to the detector as much as it is the 9-inch coils currently available. I just think that the 9 inch coil has too much to analyze when working in a trashy environment, such as Pulltab park. Personally, I prefer to work this site with either my XLPro or my Explorer. I use either the 350 or 5.3 coil on my XLPro, or the 8-inch or 5-inch coil on my Explorer. If I am willing to work as slow as I need to with the Explorer, I don't have a problem separating tones and targets. However, patience is a virtue that I wasn't blessed with. Therefore, if after a couple hours, I haven't found anything in a concentrated area with the Explorer, I find myself grabbing the much faster sweeping XLPro and working larger areas. It may not find anymore than the Explorer, but by covering more ground in a given period of time, I've increased my odds! Like I said, depth is not the issue.
A post made a couple days ago confirms that Minelab is evaluating a smaller coil for the X-50. With the X-Terra's quick reset speed, fast sweep speed, audio and visual target ID and notch discrimination, a small coil should make it a great trash killer/coin finder. HH Randy
