X-TERRA 50 GETS A 1849 LARGE CENT

Got the X-TERRA 50 Monday in the mail. Bought to use as a backup machine. This was my 3rd day hunting with it. I only changed sens setting to 20 and accepted everything above 9. This hunt was a short one so i only accepted 30 and up using a medium swing. First target was a high tone 45, 5" down. Out comes a 1849 Large Cent. Only my 2 one ever, first one was on the same site. A local school from the 1930's.

Very nice...HH TomB

Congrats on finding a 160+ year old coin on your 3rd hunt with the X-50. You're off to a great start. After finding the 49 LC, is the X-50 still your backup detector? HH Randy

Not sure my other detector is a T-2. I think the x-terra will get plenty of work. Question about coil, is the 10'' DD coil perform better than the stock coil on coins? Tom

Nice ! :clapping:

not a bad back up machine eh ?
happy swinging

Of all the FT detectors available today, I think the T2 is their best. So you might have to switch off between the two, chosing the one that is best for each site. To answer your question concerning the larger DD coil, DD coils will perform better than concentric coils in highly mineralized soils. If when using your stock concentric coil, you are able to properly ground balance the 505 with a ground phase number of 15 or 16 or larger, then the concentric coils will work well. However, if your ground phase reading on the 505 is smaller than 15, you would likely benefit from a DD coil. Regardless, the larger size of the 10.5 inch DD will allow you to cover more ground with each sweep and will likely hunt as deep as the 9-inch concentric. Again, the DD coil will hunt deeper and help stabilize the effects of mineralization when your ground balance number is smaller than 15. JMHO HH Randy

Hey Digger, is the ground phase number the same on the 50 as the 505 or are they different. Checking to see if the DD coil might work better in my ground. Thanks Tom And thanks everybody for the feedback.

I believe the minimum and maximim ground phase capabilites for all X-TERRAs is the same. (except for the X-30 which was factory preset and not adjustible) The difference between the others is how "fine" each model can be tuned in between the min and max. On the X-50, the range was only from 0 - 20. On the X-505, it goes from 0 - 50. When I refer to a "magic number" for determining whether you can benefit from using a DD coil, it is based on what I found worked best on the 70 and 705. On those two models, a 28 seems to be the break point. Since the 705 has a range of 0 - 90, I use math equations to get a number for the other units. In other words, if 28 is used for my 705, 28 divided by 90 = .31111. Take that .31111 X 50 (the range on your 505) and you have a new "magic number" of 15.555. So in my previous response to you, I used 15 - 16 as the "break point" for using a DD coil. If I were using the X-50, the "break point" would be 20 X .3111, which = 6.222. So I'd use the ground phase number of 6 on the X-50, to determine when a DD might be the best choice. JMHO HH Randy
