X-Terra 305, X-Terra 505 and X-Terra 705..........ending the speculation

I deleted the string of posts, (originated by ElRomano) made prior to the April 6th release date of the new X-Terra models. No sense having a bunch of posts that are uninformed, speculatory and misleading. Now that April 6th is here, and Minelab has officially released the product, and we have access to the real story! Thanks. HH Randy

Yes, I agree, that string was alot of speculation, now we have the facts and no longer need it.

In my interpretation there are six improvements:

One more Pattern, the Backlight, and 3 Year warranty are things I do not need to trade up to a new machine for and not must have things.

BUT I see the only real performance advantages for me with the new X-705 are three things:

1) "Improved performance in All GB modes and especially for me the GB Tracking".

2) A new "GB Tracking Offset -15 +15".

3) The new "Pinpoint Sizing".

I do not know much about these three new features??? Can someone please explain?

Ground Balance Software code was changed to offer a more precise GB during the Auto-GB function. More signal samples are being taken during the bobbing up & down of the coil during Auto-GB. This will improve performance via a more precise GB, with the most likely noticed effect coming with the use of the 3kHz coil. A by product of this change will be that during the Auto-GB procedure over milder soils, the process will take a little longer as the detector gathers more samples. Whereas over hotter soils it will take less time since there is a stronger ground signal available to process.

Many people like to manually offset their GB setting even if they use the Auto-GB function initially. They feel it provides better stability in certain ground types and offers a bit better Disc capability by doing so. Only a handful of detectors on the market allow one to offset the GB number while using the GB Tracking mode. The X705 allows you to apply a (+) or (-) 15 point setting to the Tracking mode. Therefore if the internal processor would say normally be tracking the ground at 30, then by setting the offset to (+) 10, the X705 will track at 40. There is an inhibit in the software that will not permit you to track out beyond the normal GB range. i.e. Let's say without any offset applied the X705 is tracking at 6, then you apply a (-) 10 offset, it will not go below zero(0) to a (-)4. The offset is going to be a tool able to be applied in certain situations where it's going to improve performance dramatically, other times it will not be able to be used at all, and other times it won't really matter either way. Therefore on variable soils with certain mixes like hot gravels, hot rocks etc. it will have a use, whereas on inert soils it will not really provide any use. It's going to be a tool like a spanner wrench, you may not use it much, but when you need it, you really need it!

Pinpoint Sizing....the X70 had an automatic auto-tuning pinpoint that many including myself were not fond of. We jumped into Prospecting mode to do our pinpointing, especially in trashy areas. Now the X705 has what is a VCO based manually de-tunable pinpoint. Hallelujah! Say Amen! You can select either mode that you want to use. For open areas with little trash and widely dispersed targets, you can go the Lazyman's Lobster route with the original pinpoint mode. For trash hunting use the "sizing" mode to isolate targets and size/shape them. If in sizing mode, when you push the button to pinpoint, two little quick blips/bleeps are heard to notify you that you are in "sizing" mode. For many this will dramatically cut down on the time of locating and recovering targets.

Thanks Shultz(Bill), that about explains it in a nut shell !!! That is the best info explaining the new defferences between the X-70 and the X-705 I have heard yet !! No BUTS about it like Shultz said on Hogan's Heros. KNOW WE KNOW !

We have to decide for ourselves, is it enough to trade up to a new unit for ?

ferrite readings

Bill with the changes to the GB system can a user hear the actual ground response when bobbing or, do we need to still rely on those dang tones?

Thanks for putting some meat on the bone for understanding the benefits of the new features Bill. Very concise and useful.
Thanks also to everybody else who has taken the time to pass on their knowledge of the new machines.
Mick Evans.

You still have to listen to the dang tones.;) If you are over hot soil the tones above and below the set point will be loud & solid. It's only when you get over milder soil that the tone loudness goes down and you get weak/mixed tones.
