x-pointer vs new garrett AT?

I am inclined to try the x-pointer beings it is around $90 new and it has zero falsing. However, the new garrett AT supposedly doesn't false like the old pro pointer did when to much downward pressure is applied. Kinda wondering if the garrett has to be shut off each time, beings the (find me) alarm goes off after 2 min. of being on. I personally like to leave mine on at times, and it would be annoying for it to start beeping after just 2 min. The regular pro pointer works fine other than the falsing with pressure, and the chirping thing, (ground balance drift), it starts to do after being on to long. I am leaning towards the X-pointer for now. The waterproofing and added features of the garrett would also be nice, but probably not necessary for me.
I know I hated the way the TRX took longer to turn off and on, and the tip detection only. I am accustom to the pro-pointer, so the second or so of extra time for on-off is annoying to me.
What does everyone else think?

My XPointer beeps if left on too long.

Good to know! That might persuade me to look the other way.

Any of you guys owned a garrett pro pointer previous to the x-pointer? I am curious what previous Garrett PP owners like and dis-like about the X-pointer.
Sounds like the x-pointer shuts off after 3 min as well.
Does the x-pointer have a delay when turned off and on, like the TRX, or is it more the style of the pro pointer?

I first owned a Whites BullsEye II... It was OK but having to hold the button down while searching was a pain, so much so, I decided to get the very popular Garrett ProPointer.
That was a big improvement, but I noticed very quickly, that it falsed too much when it was pressed into the bottom or sides of the hole. Not good in my estimation. I was offered a new Garrett ProPointer or a Deteknix X-Pointer at a discounted price with the purchase of a new Minelab X-terra 705. I did buy the X-terra and chose the X-Pointer. I really do like the X-Pointer better than the Garrett ProPointer... As Dave McMahon implied, on the Detecting Lifestyle Network podcast... Its virtually indestructible... So far I agree. It does turn off automatically, but I never use that function. I always turn mine off before I re-holster it. One word of warning about the Deteknix, it goes through batteries pretty quickly compared to the Garrett. I usually get about 11 hours use out of the Deteknix... The Garrett much more time before having to change out the battery. One more suggestion that I must make whether you buy a Deteknix or a Garrett, cover the speaker hole on either of them with tape to protect the speaker opening from dirt. I use Gorilla Tape myself. I almost forgot, it does take the Deteknix a little bit longer before it's ready to use when you hit the power button... Not too noticeable though... Hope that helps.

The reason that the X-pointer eats batteries is the fact that its a Pulse based probe but the Garrett and TRX are VLF based,i have the standard Garrett Pro Pointer and its never missed a beat for me,one thing i never do is get it soaking wet or use it near water as it is just a matter of time before it gets damaged.A few of the new kids on the block are starting to produce water proof machines but of course you do have to take precations when changing the batteries and keeping the seal in good condition other wise you will junk one of these water proof ones as well.

I still own and use the Whites BullsEye probe and that also has never missed a beat, only reason i changed to the Garrett was the fact the audio increases the nearer the target the BullsEye stays constant.

I didn't use the Pulse induction vs the VLF comparison because it didn't change any of the facts. The Garretts "never missed a beat for me" either... In fact, it even threw in more than a few extra "beats" for me, when it wasn't necessary. The Whites.... Aw, what's the use?

I think I am going to go with the X-pointer when it get's a little closer to summer. That will give me some time to see what everyone thinks of the new Garrett. Probably be some video comparisons with in a few weeks of the Garrett's release. I can always turn around and sell the X-pointer if I just can't stand it. Personally, I think I will like it. I've got a pretty good concept of the x-pointer after watching a few youtube videos.

Thanks for the comments.

Hi, I hunt with a buddy that leaves his Garrett on all the time and it drives me crazy. I trun mine on and off, as I need it. I will be hunting a few yards away from my buddy and I can hear his pp chattering away as it passes his trowel or any metal button on his pants as he is walking along. The 5 minute off on the Xpointer is to saver your battery so when you stow your tool in a clean area it will not just sit there draining your battery, it will go off after it chatters a bit to let you know you left it on. If you are using it in a hole and it take you more than 5 minutes to find something it does not start chattering, not as long as you are using it and chasing a signal. There goes my buddy again, his garrett is chattering away -- I don't think he can hear it because he has really good ear phones. My ear phones are not so good, I guess. Peace, Dan

Oh, forgot -- I do have an Xpointer and love it. As for the batteries not lasting as long? That may be the case but the one I have is on its way to warranty service because the screw cap some loose ever so slightly and I seemed to be going through batteries much more than the Garrett. Then I started checking the batteries that were supposed to be dead when I got home and found the battery was not dead. Puzzled? Until the screw cap would come loose with the slightest bump and the battery would then loosen and act like it was either dead or going dead but it became obvious the screw cap was not seating properly. I took the security ring off and managed to get it to tighten down but that did not last as it seems only the bottom two threads were holding. So, off for warranty service. It works so good that became my primary pp while the Garrett became my loaner backup. So, if you seem to be going through the batteries check them on a battery tester and if they are still good then have a close look at the screw cap.

One final think and suggestion: covering the small speaker on both the Garrett and the Xpointer is a good idea, but the rubber buttons are a potential problem as well. I took a plastic baggie and cut it to fit over the handle, and using black electrical tape to seal it up covering both the speaker and the button or buttons. It is pretty much water proof now.

Well, I pulled the trigger and got the X pointer!

I bought one this past summer and love it! Absolutely no problems with it and it works a lot better than my harbor freight PP that I had before Had about 10 minutes of panicking when I dropped it in a field, but eventually found it. I now use the lanyard to keep it attached to me!

I just ordered a new x-pointer.

Just received my new X-pointer and it seems nice. Too much snow to test in service but air test are very good. 2-1/2 to 3" on test of copper bullet and clad quarter. It will super tune an extra 1-1/2". Now to check in the ground when snow leaves.

I believe you'll be happy... I commented before about battery usage... Now you can see for yourself how many hours you get out of a battery before it needs replacing in the X-pointer. I say about 12... See what you come-up with. The temp can be a factor too... I wasn't hunting in anything warmer than 60 degrees.... Just be safe and always have an extra 9v with you. It's funny, I went to the Deteknix website and they have 2 new pinpointers coming out one that's waterproof to 9'... One that's waterproof to 120'.

I received my X-pointer on Monday. My first impression is that it seems a lesser quality build than the garrett I am used to.
The motor for the vibrate doesn't seem as powerful or doesn't seem as smooth or something.
The battery end cap also fits a little wonky. It seems to tighten down ok though.
I like the LED light better for sure.-much brighter.
It gets a little more depth and sensitivity than my garrett as well.
What I really like is that the audio and vibrate can run separately or together. I figure I'm gonna try just using the audio for normal use, to possibly make the batt. last longer. Vibrate only will be nice for when I want to be more stealthy around people.
I do and don't like the buttons. I like that they are very pronounced, but they seem a little tough to push in when changing modes. I guess that's better than it turning on in the holster though.
Although, after using the X-pointer buttons, it makes me not like the feel of my pro-pointer button anymore.
I think I will like the x-pointer (it all-in-all), but later this year, I will probably purchase a Garrett AT as well. I am sure there will be a zillion videos and tests by then to help curve my decision.
I am looking forward to my first hunt with the X-pointer!

I agree, the Garrett has a better feel, quality wise, but for me the price and performance of the X-Pointer outweighed that. I went to the Deteknix website yesterday and guess what? They have two new pinpointers due out in the Spring... One is waterproof to 3 meters and the other is waterproof to 40 meters... Go figure! Best of luck.

As much as I am enjoying the X-pointer, I've also decided to try the new Garrett AT. I was gonna wait for a few more months,( when the smoke cleared and they were more readily available), but as luck would have it a forum sponsor ended up with some extras not spoken for. Guess I got my Father's day present early. :garrett:HH.
