X-ing out moder zinc pennies...

Today I put on the sidewalk about 10 modern zinc pennies and x'd them out. But they still make a sound when I go over them.
I never want to ever ever dig for another modern penny EVER! Yet I want to still find the old wheat back copper pennies.
How do you do it so you can still get the copper but not the zinc?
Thanks!

If you delete Zinc pennies, you are going to loose some IH pennies plus other goodies. What would you do if you went over a zinc reading and a buddy detected behind you and dug a jar full of coins with a zinc jar lid on it?????????

Tony,
Corey is right, if you notch out zinc pennies you will not get any IH or the older wheat pennies, you will get newer wheat pennies though.
Now if you are in a area where you dont expect any IH or wheat pennies and just new coins than you can notch them out and go for just the copper and clad coins and maybe some silver.
What I do is know where the zinc and IH will read and if it is shallow I will leave them, but if they are weak sounding I will dig them.

I HATE THEM!!!!!.....but I dig them anyway even though I've picked my coil quite a ways off the ground, still get a strong signal, and then KNOW what it is. I just can't resist digging them in hopes that someday one will be screwed to a jar full of Seated, Barbers, and IH's.
Zinc pennies annoy me too, but after finding an IH at 2" I just dig them anyway.

But like I hear alot of you saying is this:
If it is shallow it is probably modern. If deep probably IH or wheat.

Indian Cents I have found this year I can say that I am happy to dig the zinc. If I had knocked them out I would not have found as many, also some of my Barber Dimes would still be in the ground.
I wad detecting with a friend a few weeks ago (Rick and Corey know him) and he found a Walking Half at 6 inches and it read in the zinc range.
DIG THOSE ZINCS!!!

but I have dug a Barber Dime at less than an inch and even found some wheats and mercs on top of the ground. Thats the funny thing about this hobby...you never know whats making the sound till you dig it.

Randy, when you say you found those coins at less than an inch was the soil gravel and hard?

It was just regular soil. I think that the squirles dig them up sometimes while hunting for food. The other reason is that in the winter here the frost heaves the coins up closer to the surface and some coins will be pushed right out of the ground.

are you talking about hunting playgrounds. that would be the only place you would find a lot of zincs. in such places you could ignore them but them would eventually mask out all other targets.

Tony
you might find a post on the minelab fbs forum interesting. posted by ntheh food for thought
