x-1 probe help

just got a new x-1 probe in the mail today,hooked it up think i got a bad one only will read a quarter at 1 1/2'' had my sen set at 28 tryed auto and manual any suggestions?
 
Robert,
1 1/2" - 2" is about normal for an air test. Like the Minelab coils, air tests are not an accurate indicator of depth capability. Also, long time buried targets read deeper than freshly buried as with the coils.
