Anyone have any idea what this is?

Dime shown for scale. Rounded rectangle cross section. Hollow with some attachments/partition/? partway up the large end. From the depth and other indicators from this location, I'd guess around 1940s but other than that I have no clues at all.

Looks like an old CO2 cartridge.
