My guess is that somebody had "sealed" the ring with some sort of lacquer, it (lacquer coating) in turn, had taken on the indigenous red coloration in our clay soil, and that the pitted reddish appearance was in the lacquer. Here is what Blackie's ring l@@ks like after a few hours of Quarterhorse "love".
How long was it in the ground....research shows that the Jeweler started in business in 1924, how long does it take a honker gold ring to sink 4 inches?

BUT I did have $428.00 dollars worth of chain at spot, marked 14 K that apparently isn't gold at all........ The 14 K test "smoked it" literally, and the streak totally disappeared in a whiff of smoke, the 10 K test floated the streak........I dunno maybe the clasp is 14 K...... that's where the mark is.
