Wow! Why Such a Long Coil Cord on the Excalibur?

I just got a new/previously owned Excalibur 1000. In all my years of using MDrs I have never seen such a long cord from the electronics to the coil. If I were to stretch it out, I bet I could add two extra bottom shafts and I still would have cord remaining. I could be 7' 9" and be able to adjust it to proper length for swinging it. It looks like the previous owner just wrapped the wire around the shaft and it took maybe 25 wraps to do it. Should I do the same thing? If I looped the coil wire and secured it with nylon wire ties would bumping the loop or moving it in water cause falsing. Is their a reason for such a long cord or did I get some anomaly with my purchase? Other than that everything seems to work as it should. Now I just have to go get wet!

I zip tie mine a couple times up the shaft then make a neat coil around my hand with the rest and zip it to the shaft near the handle. leave enough excess at the coil for complete movement of coil in all directions. I think it makes a neater job than the wrapping and you don't end up with a set in the wire as bad.

This is because a lot of guys like to hipmount the controls instead of using a straight shaft. Having the wire wrapped around the shaft not only adds weight to the whole thing, it creates more water resistance sweeping it back and forth. It is best to run the cable straight up one side of the shaft and taping it in place with enough of a loop at the bottom as to not put any extra strain at the coil connection.

Thanks to all! Hip mounting would require a longer cord. Duh!(on me) Mine I got second hand and the wires already have a 'set' in them. I will try and see if I can't run the wire up one side and then make a smooth tight coil at the top and attach the left over cord there. I do prize the knowledge and experience that others share here.
