The Excalibur 1000 arrived and my hubby and I tried it out yesterday. All I can say is wow :surprised: what a difference! Went to a heavily hunted park beach - (this area is mostly river rock and black sand). I collected 81 coins for about $5.50 total in a few hours. This was the same location I hunted recently with my MXT, and I have seen others hunt it frequently too. A lot of coins were being missed!

I really liked the way the Excalibur picked out targets that were next to nails and iron. It did not bounce back and forth on readings like my MXT does. Pinpointing was so easy. The tones are really different the way they ramp up and down.

I wish it had a depth meter though. And I am spoiled on a VDI readout - I miss that too.

I really like this machine so far, and so does my hubby. Now he is talking about getting another Minelab, but we are not sure which one to get. I like to hunt in fresh water and on the beach mostly (hence the Excalibur). He will probably hunt the beach and parks, etc.

He is wondering about the Sovereign, Quattro, Explorer and other Minelabs. I need to find information on all the current the Minelab detectors and what each one is more geared toward. I checked the Minelab website, but it is fairly limited on information. Do you have any web sites or information I can check out to read more about each detector?

I read somewhere (I think it was a forum) that an Excalibur is really a waterproof Sovereign..... is this true? I just wonder if the Excalibur versatile enough to cover most detecting situations? (including parks, etc).

I'd really appreciate some input.........

There are some real knowledgable people on this sight that I am sure will send you in the right direction but from reading your post, It seems to me that you might want to try the Explorer as it offers the features that you say you miss. It also uses the multiple frequencies like the Excalibur only more of them.

Good Luck and HH, Bottlebum

Yes the excal is a waterproof Sovereign.Weight may be something to consider. There are a lot of good machines out there the various forums need to be researched. Dan

"I read somewhere (I think it was a forum) that an Excalibur is really a waterproof Sovereign..... is this true?" Yes, the original Excal was the brain child of our own Gary Storm (Detector Pro). It has the Sov circuitry. "I just wonder if the Excalibur versatile enough to cover most detecting situations? (including parks, etc)." Yes, however, on land I strongly recommend you use a Lejermon Harness to carry the swing weight, or better yet, get a Sovereign GT. The Sov can be counter-balanced: hip mounted: chest mounted or a number of weight reducing options. It has Iron Mask and a full range of mode adjustments the Excal does not have. It is excellent for coin, relic, jewelry, gold nugget and beach hunting. I swing a custom shaft that weighs only six ounces. You'll have a choice of optional coils to use and accessories, including the Sun Ray S-1 pinpoint probe. ID meters are optional and can be removed. I've used Minelab detectors since 1992 and they still remain an excellent choice. If I can answer any questions about metal detectors just give me a call. Good hunting, David@Dixie
