It everything I want and it addresses the shorcomings of my previous favorite, the 5700.
If all goes well I'll order it next week!

Great purchase John. I had a 5700 and last week I got my 8700. There are some real changes. Some I agree with and some I don't.

I examined the 8700 this morning.
Still has that shutter lag but not as bad as previous Nikons.
8mp sensor. Keep in mind even though it's 8mp that does'nt mean that it gives you better pics than the current 6mp pro D-cams. It's a smaller sensor in size compared to the D-procams.
All in all it's good choice. I might buy one for my girlfriend. Or I'm strongly leaning toward buying her the new D70 Nikon.

I'm leaning to the 8700 because of the better features over the 5700. The 8mp is just a bonus. Also, I wouldn't expect a super zoom 8x to be able to compete with a pro lens with a smaller zoom. Looks like the quality is up with the best, though.
Newegg has it for $850.
