WOW! I am absolutely stunned!

Hello everyone,

I am absolutely stunned at what I have just seen with my lowly Silver uMax. I got this detector about two years ago and have used it quite a bit, but I had never done any actual testing with it in my yard. Well, tonight I did, and I have to say the results were astounding. I decided to try a test on a regular clad quarter first. I dug a hole 7 inches deep measured and placed the quarter flat in the bottom of the hole and covered it up. I turned on my Silver uMax to all metal sensitivity 1 (Lowest). I could hear the quarter loud and clear. I turned on the disc and slowly turned it until it was all the way up and still sensitivity 1, and still I could pick up the quarter same intensity as in all metal. I couldn't believe it, but I got a big shovel and dug a hole 11 inches deep and repeated the test exactly the same as before (sensitivity 1), and got exactly the same result! Then I remembered that I forgot to check the area for other metals, so I removed the quarter and scanned the area. What I found was that there was three objects in the dirt directly over the quarter, a ferrous metal tab about 3/4 in. by 1.5 inches, a rusted washer, and a small piece of aluminum. The discrimination eliminated all of these objects and still picked up the quarter loud and clear on full discrimination at sensitivity level 1 at 11 inches with the stock 8 inch coil. I guess that explains why over the last two years, I have given up on many very good signals because I could not dig deep enough to get it. I was going to do more tests, but it began to rain and I had to go in.

Never mind. I got overly excited. I went out and cleared all the metal out of the area and did the test again. I could just barely get a signal at 11 inches on the quarter. I guess the other metals were giving me signals before, or maybe I forgot to switch it to disc mode and I turned the disc all the way up and I thought I was in disc mode. Oh well, I still love the Silver uMax.

If you get that sort of depth in all metal, you may be interested to read an article by Clive James Clynick, published in a magazine called Silver and Gold, 1998 Annual. The article is called "All-Metal Mode For Silver & Gold". Well worth reading and well worth trying.

I should add that the Silver and Gold magazine was the Western and Eastern Treasure magazine Annual of 1998. Apologize for any confusion.

Tha Silver uMax was my first Tesoro, and I cleaned-out a virgin CW Cavalry camp with it. I have been digging for 30 years, and bought the Silver about 4 years ago. Then, I bought a Cibola, but in all honesty, the Silver is my favorite. I also own a Tiger Shark, and it's a great machine, too. That little Silver is awesome!!!!!!

I just can't remember ever hearing anybody saying anything really bad about the Silver.--We've got one and is it ever a fun little guy-love it!--The wife & I each had one & sold one of them-probably should have kept it.--If you watch the classifieds, you will see that a used one very seldom comes up for sale.--People get them and just want to keep 'em!--------Del

well sapper, this man ,clive james clynick writes many books and articles mainly about minelab detectors he uses and yes i tried to find the article in the silver and gold magazine.did he per chance post it on forum somewhere maybe?i'd like to read it.is it a long article?maybe just maybe you could print me a copy on personal messages, when your sitting around at home with nothing to do?lol bye for now !! blowfly

Hi Blowfly, I'll try to work out how to do what it is you request...dont put off having breakfast waiting for it, but when my daughter gets over her current bout of exams, I'll try to enlist her help.
she may be a willing cadet, but if not, then I'll have no option but to issue a direct order. Hope that you're finding heaps...Sapper.
