WOW a completely different v3i around EMI

I was shopping around and decided to try a rf choke made from radio shack on my d2 coil lead near the control box. I have an intersection of 3 underground power lines in my yard and have not been able to run a gain of more than 3 and a disc of 80. I could not hunt within 4 (more like 10 feet) feet of the line without erratic behavior. I placed the rf choke on and could hunt within 4 feet of the line with a gain of 10 and a disc of 85. It also smoothed the target id all through my yard where I did not see the EMI. I found a nickel immediately after placing the choke at 7 inches within 4feet of the power line. I then found a cast iron horses head the size of a half dollar within 2 feet of the line. I have been over this area several hundred times and could not see these targets with any certainty till after the choke was in place. I also found a dozen clad pennies and copper washers that where on the surface.

The one rf choke I purchased was slightly to small and rather than cut the coil wire by forcing it on I removed the ferrite pieces and wrapped them in place with electrical tape. Closer to the control box the better.

It was the best $3.00 or so I have spent in months.

Thats a great idea to improve performance with the ferrite absorbing some of the transmitted RF (EMI).

I am wondering whether this affects the performance in any way, being a passive energy absorption element, it may have little effect on the machines performance.

Good thinking!

I'm guessing he is talking about a ferrite choke.

That would be the one Larry. It works wonders, not miracles, but wonders. I was able to go back into the same area I could not detect and pull two buttons, a copper washer and some clad.

I am still struggling with the overwhelming iron.

I am glad it is working for you. There has been some discussion about those on the modification forum and the guy selling them on Ebay was shut down.

All the posts I have read, said they saw no improvement. I would think if it did any good Whites would use one. If any has good luck let us know. Now I hope Carl or Anne can give us advice.

It costs a couple of bucks..... give it a try and then tell me what you think. Buy one from radio shack.

It definitely, absolutely helped me in an area that I had to run my gain at 1 and 2.

I'm with you burlbark, I'm sure it doesn't hurt anything and if it doesn't work...... well...... there goes a couple of bucks.
