WOW! 13 Cents that MADE MY DAY!!!

Almost didn't go out today, rained all week, muddy, my back hurt, and had lots to do at home. Then this afternoon, I decided to give one more try to a permission I'd been skunked at twice, nothing but junk. So one more shot, maybe the rain will help the parched ground! Only had an hour and a half to dig. Literally swung my detector 5 or 6 times and 68 on my F4! OK, has to be a wheatie, old place. 2 inches down in the soft mud out popped my first wheatie! Cool. Swung another 15 feet or so, and out popped another wheatie! Double Cool! So I called my friend and told him he needs to come over, which he did, about an 8 minute drive. Before he got there, BAM, like a bolt of lightning in my eye![attachment 330333 1941Db.jpg] Now that's more like it, I thought! I promptly called him again and told him about the silver! He cut his 8 minute drive down to about 4!!! He was there in a heartbeat! Only had 45 minutes to more to hunt and I had to leave and go meet my wifey. I showed him the mark on the ground where the dime had been, perfect circle in the dirt. We hunted another 45 minutes and all I found was another wheatie, so we left. Keith hadn't found anything. Got home, showered and went to help my wife. A little over an hour later, I was rushing back home to see what dates the Wheaties were! OK, 1914 D, 1920 D, and 1929 D, cool! Mercury was 1941 D, I already knew that. So I got on Ebay to see the sold prices, first coin checked was 1914 D Wheatie! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! $187 for that one!!!!! OK, checked the mintage of 1914 D Wheat Backs, 1,193,000! Third lowest mintage of all the Wheat Backs!!! GREAT!!!!! Lowest one sold on Ebay was an old pitted one, that looked aweful, $39! Well my newest find is now in OLIVE OIL for at least a couple months!!! I'll shake it gently once in a while! See how it comes out, has quite a bit of crust on it, but I'll be patient, it'll clean up! Happy Hunting and thanks for Looking! Here is my 13 cents that made my day!!![attachment 330334 20160430.jpg]

Tim , congratz on the 1914 D wheatie. My book shows a G-4 at $200.00 to $3,300.00 for a MS-63 . What grade do you have there? It's always fun to find silver , there no dought is more coins around there , possibly some barbers.
I have a few coins soaking in olive oil also.

Can't tell what grade it is yet Copper Kidd, has too much crud stuck to it, but the little bit I can see doesn't look too bad. I've found some that you couldn't tell heads from tails, and they cleaned up nicely. Just have to wait for the Oil to work. I'll update in a month or more. Still can't believe one of the 1.2 million would be buried 2 inches deep just 3 miles from my house!!!

Some cool pocket change. You could buy a 6 1/2 oz or 10 oz coke with the dime, oops those days are over.:nopity:

cool finds! I need to pay attention to my pennys.

Yeah, I look at all my finds, never know what you've found till you research it. I really don't have much hope for this one being very valuable, from what I saw today it does have some pits in it. That's OK, I am satisfied that I found #4 on the 25 most valuable pennys minted! I wouldn't sell it anyway. LOL

Thanks!

Here's an update on my 14 D. Soaked in olive oil for 4 days, used the pencil trick, almost not touching it, rinsed with soap and water and dried. Then had my photographer take a macro shot of it. At least you can see the date now!

That is a great coin, congrats! I have what I think may be a 1943 copper wheat penny but it is so crusty I can't tell for certain. Don't know what the best way is to clean it without damaging it further. Might have to give the olive oil a try.

Weigh it, These steel pennies have a weight of 2.70 grams, as opposed to 3.11 grams for typical copper ... if it is truly 1943 copper, I would get a professional opinion as to what to do with it. Could be worth a fortune!

DA! that would be easy?!? Thanks copper kidd, I seem to see a lot of you on here!!! LOL

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The penny passed the magnet test, I tried that shortly after I found it. I'll have to weigh it next. I just wish I could make out the date better. Not sure what the best way to clean it is but I might try the olive oil.

Update on the 1914 D, took it out of the olive oil tonight, rinsed it with soap and water to get the oil off, dried it, and did the pencil trick on it. Still looks pretty much the same, sigh. Which I knew how to clean it up without damaging it. This stuff is really on there! Looks bad. Open to suggestions?

Here is the final result of the 1914D, Soaked in olive oil for months, took it out and washed it with soap and water, gently cleaning it with a soft toothbrush, more like dabbing it. Didn't do very well, can't hardly read the D now? Oh, well! It wasn't worth anything the way it was. Can't wait until spring!!!
