Would you still detect if forums were outlawed?

You have to admit it. Rushing home after finding that huge gold ring or a mint Franklin half wouldn't be so grand without metal detecting forum! Right?
My wife gets about as excited as she does when it's time to run the dishwasher when I bring home something cool. " oh...that nice.....I guess."
But when I post it on the forum it's all WTGs and Wows and awesome find!!!
I bet some of us actually spend more time browsing the MD forums then actually detecting. I know I have these past few months...years?

Forums are a campfire we gather around at the end of a hunt, just like subsistence hunters have done for years..we share advice and strategies and help each other get better...for some reason, detecting fills that need in certain brain traits to go out and hunt...not all people have it, but anybody that is hooked on a pursuit oriented "sport" like fishing, hunting, gold, has it...detectorists sure do...
So we cannot actually help ourselves, we have to detect, it how we are wired...Women's "oh thats nice I guess" spur us onward to greatness because nothing is ever good enough for them! Revenge hunting sure makes a fellow sharp afield!

I detected for three decades before metal detecting forums existed. I still show friends and family my actual finds, post only the more worthy pictures on the forum.

I also have been detecting for decades (1962) and have never posted a pic. of a find. The forums have nothing to do with wether I detect of not.

YES!
I was detecting before personal computers invaded our homes.

I think it's natural for everyone including metal detectorists to seek some appreciation for what we do and find. Men in particular have always been the 'hunter gatherer' for 1000's of years and have at the end of the day "gathered around the campfire" as Mud mentioned to talk about what and how we gathered during that particular day.
With this particular hobby, we 'hunt and gather' coins, relics and jewellery and still 'gather around the campfire' (Internet Forums) to talk about what and how we gathered that day or in the past.
Females in general (including my wife) are not really too excited seeing our finds unless it's a big gold ring or some jewellry that she can wear and again, there are many female detectorists that are really turned on to this hobby and that's great!! I, personally have learned a great deal from others how to metal detect from the forums and that is a very valuable thing that comes from all of us posting our finds and sharing the methods we used.
It's perfectly normally to post finds and enjoy other's posted finds but like Facebook and other social media, you can get obsessed with it to the exclusion of other important things like..............metal detecting!!!!!

P.s. If there were no forums, I would still be out there detecting just as much and it would not lessen my pleasure for this great hobby!!

There are some great people on here............ The super highway has opened up a new communication...

geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzz maybe we all should thank AL Gore.........

Ya know. Now that I think about it..Maybe I wouldn't detect as much..........This forum inspires me to get out there !!!

I get and share information to try and be either enlightened, or be enlightening to others, I rarely ever post my finds on the forum, but that's not to mean that I don't share them with somebody, but its usually my brothers or my wife who has very little interest in the hobby. But! no I for sure don't need the internet to spread my stories of bottle caps, pull tabs, clad coins, and the rare silver coin to keep me detecting.

I enjoy setting around the campfire, but I was detecting long before PC's, forums and the like. If they were gone tomorrow my detecting interest would be the same. Old age makes the campfire a little warmer.

Detecting forums are just additional source of information the same as book, magazines, brick and mortar detecting stores etc,as long as detecting is legal in the country that we live in then of course we can still function without forums. The internet is here too stay and so will forums of some description.

Detectorist have done without the 'www' for decades so of course you can still detect without it,what i can see happening is printed media ie detecting magazines, books etc will gradually drop off but that is also happening with any other forms of written media as well.

Its called change.

I know one hunter who never posts his finds on the forums. He will lurk and sometimes make comments on finds but that is the extent of it. I know because we hunt the same waters and he even sent me a PM one time telling me not to post my finds and why it was important to make a name for myself on these forums. I told him I liked to share my finds with the people on here and that I was a grown 65 year old and didn't like people telling me what I can or cannot post, he never asked again. You guys know him but I am not the type of person to make waves for anyone. Kind of ruins it for everyone. I know he has made some good finds because I the finds I make in these waters. This is the greateset hobby out there. John

Forums are great for the information they transmit and would have shortened the learning curve for many of us had it existed back in the day.
There is also a great deal of misinformed individuals posting stuff that people soakup simply because of who posted it.
Posting finds is mostly ego.

I detect in spite of forums not in lieu of. :)

Sure, I did for many years before Findmall came along.

The forums help and inhance the enjoyment of the hobby but with or without them I would be hunting just as zealously. Many times I don't post my hunts and finds because words are inadequat to convey the satisfaction of unraveling a multicoin spill or popping up an interesting relic in an unexpected place. I also hunt for artifacts and it is amazing the balm to the soul to find a nice point and take a moment to wonder about the man who made it, his hopes and dreams, did he have a family he was providing for when the artifact was lost?, etc. I get a similer satisfaction metal detecting. Only wish I had srarted 40 years ago!!

Absolutely. Detected before I even knew there were forums. We are like minded guys for the most part and I enjoy good factual discussions along with humor thrown in.
I also enjoy seeing the relic and old coin finds posted.
