Would You Dig It?

Well-known member
I hit a deep target in an open field where I have found some minies and a few eagle buttons. After digging down a foot and a half,I uncovered part of what appears to be a large(4"-6") diameter iron object.Since I only had my small shovel,I gave up and covered my hole. There were no houses near where this was found and I know that the union army camped here.Would they have buried things that deep and what could it possibly be(cannon maybe)? DBULL

I'd dig it just out of curiosity... and then let us know what it is. It could be something of great historical value.

its probably junk, but will you be able to sleep wondering what it could be....i would have to dig it up just for my own piece of mind......ps--let us know what it was when you go back there with a shovell......

yea, if you dig it, it will be junk, if you dont dig it, it will be a treasure box, I know here in the south, they used iron pots and chests to hide thier valuables in. just a thought,

Dig it up!

Here in Florida, while detecting near the mouth of a river that empties into the Gulf of Mexico, I once partially exposed what I am sure must have been a cannon. It was about four to five foot long (maybe a little longer) and a foot or more in diameter. Hard to tell the exact size because I had only exposed a small portion of the center most top part of it (had only a hand trowel). What makes me think it was a cannon is the fact that the wall of the cylinder shaped object, when rapped on with my nuckles, felt very very thick, quite unlike what a regular pipe would feel like. By this time, It was late in the afternoon so I had to call it quits and go home. It didn't occur to me at that time that it might have been a cannon and for no good reason, I never went back to the spot until after the whole area had been turned into a park. Nothing about the area looks the same as it did when I discovered the object and the park is now off limit's to detectorist's. This was sixteen years ago and I still think about it to this day. I've always wondered if maybe someone working for the parks department might have found it during the parks construction? Heck, it could still be there. Don't think that I haven't considered going back with a probe in hand.....lol!

Don't let the same thing happen to you. You might regret it as I have.

Good luck and HH-CC
