Nice find!
Don't matter if it's a penny surface signal, to however deep - I always dig the penny signal. They just don't all end up like your find, but one might not know unless they dig for it. My last surprise bonus penny signal turned out to be a charm pendant during my last hunt, one of many reasons I always dig them.
 
I dig any coin at six inches and any coin at any depth.
