Would like to hear some reports on the CTX 6" coil.

Are many of you using it & what performance results are you having with this coil?----With the faster processor of the CTX, is there any real advantage with this coil over the 11" stock coil in moderate trash & heavy mineralization?

Absolutely a benefit.

I was not initially sold on the 6" coil. Would really like an 8" coil.

But used the 6" in an iron infested gold mine camp. My buddy was running his stock coil on his CTX. There were several targets we compared that he would not have dug for lack of signal and lack of ID.

I think I pulled another 8-10 targets in a small area we had hunted hard with the stock coils. These ground are highly invested with iron and highly mineralized (gold country)

Good little coil. Still would like an 8" though!!

The advantage of a 6 inch coil is better separation in any situation but I think the key to your question Del, is in MODERATE trash and IMHO, a 6 inch coil is not needed there. A lot depends on your patience factor too, I really have to struggle hunting with the 6 inch coil. I hunt in moderate trash all the time and I get very good separation just by going slow with the stock coil in Ferrous Coin and if there are multiple targets under the coil, I know it and just have to take a little extra time to isolate them.

Some people hunt with a small coil all the time and love it and of course, if you hunt in very trashy spots, yea, the 6 inch is very nice. The CTX 06 is a nice accessory coil to have on hand though but I don't use it in moderate trash/mineralized ground.

I never noticed a difference in performance of these two coil that I could relate to mineralization.
6" is a big improvement when it comes to dealing with trash. Much better separation resulting in more stable FeCo numbers, cleaner target trace and cleaner sound without loosing depth and absolutely precise pinpointing. The obvious trade-off is the speed at which the ground can be covered.
For an area which gives several trash signals with almost every swing, it is a "must have". For an area where it takes several swings to get some returns, I stick with the stock coil. It deals very well with smaller pockets of trash concentration by approaching it from several angles.

I think Andrew has it right, only reason to own one is to use in trashy areas otherwise no benefits.Dr.Tones has an opinion on this coil somewhere on here.I would like to own one but at the price cant see it happening.

All excellent answers to my question guys.---Thanks much for taking the time to answer it, appreciate it.------My wife & I have the Etrac with small coil for it and also have the CTX.----We are thinking about getting the 6" coil for the CTX .----That way we could each run a detector with a small coil on it (in trashy areas) and hopefully get a little different "slant"/report on possible targets in that trash.-----It appears (as mentioned) that the key to get the full benefits of doing this is to know at what point to switch over to the small coils--and there was some good answers given on this also.------Thanks again, I'm ready to "go get 'em" now!-----------Del

Here is a link to a post I made last fall from a location first using the 11" coil and then the 6" coil. In a trashy area the 6" coil proved to do extremely well. Good Luck.......and HH

With the CTX being faster I don't use the 6" coil nearly as much as I did with the Explorer/Etrac.....But with Explorer/Etrac I kept a 6" Excelerator mounted up and would just grab another detector/coil when the need arose.... When the need arises with the CTX its such a hassle changing coils that I usually just slow way down and make do...If I do make the switch its not long before I'm though the tough spot and ready for more coverage....This is where a 8 incher would be nice..When using the 6X8 on a Explorer/Etrac I would feel comfortable with the depth , coverage and separation abilities to use the one coil even though many times I could have stood to go back to a larger coil.... Ive seen the 6" pull some stuff the 11' wouldnt touch and there is no doubt about its ability/usefulness....Depth wise I dont think there is an inch difference in depth between all three CTX coils in normal conditions......wildherre

I have only been using mine for about 3 or 4 days worth. I was able to recover that watch casing this morning even though there was a large piece of iron right next to it...

There's no doubt that the 6" is a great little coil but I also think that an 8"
would be just a little better as far as coverage and still being able to maneuver it a little better than the 11"in some areas. I loved the SEF 6x8 on the Etrac.

Best coil I have used and the only one I keep on the detector. Been hunting and old fairgrounds lots and lots of trash great for separating the 6 to 10 hits on a pass. I find no difference in depth in my ground just slow in covering the place. This coil rocks in the trash. sube

I like it for really trashy areas as it takes less time to isolate the targets and it does have its place when maneuvering around things and getting into tight spots or closer to metal fences etc... However... It takes a year to cover a 10x10 patch with. I still haven't found a target with it that the stock coil couldn't hit (also hunting slow)
