Would like some help regarding tripods/monopods...

Mega

I would like some help please regarding using the camer for stabilty wise,do members on this forum just use a digital camer free hand when taking pictures or do you use say a tripod or monopod.

Dont fancy dragging a tripod around so my way of thinking is using a monopod as they can fold down into a very small package,so what do other folks do when using your camera ??

If you could help with any suggestions please,i dont want to carry alot of equipment as the plan is too travel light with just the camera, bag and a monopod.

Am i going about it the right way ???

Hello Mega B, welcome to the Digital Photography Forum.

I am providing three links below that will help you to decide whether to use a tripod or monolog.

When using a high shutter speed and watching your breathing, you should usually do OK hand holding the camera for most situations. When you need to travel light, and need some help in holding the camera steady, a monopod is a great aid. For the ultimate aid in preventing camera movement, use the tripod. Whether you decide to purchase a monopod or tripod, or both, it is suggested that you purchase a good grade one, not some cheaply made bargain monopod or tripod.

I might like to add that you might want to also consider taking a small pillow case and filling it with rice or oiled sunflower seeds. The filled pillow case can be used as a padded support on the car door window sill, or hood of the car, and will help in preventing camera movement when taking a picture. I prefer using oiled sunflower seeds because of less dust than when using rice.

Good luck, and please post some of the pictures that you take. Kelley (Texas) :)

@Kelley (Texas),many thanks for your reply,i am going to buy both a tripod and mono pod, although i think mainly i will be carrying the mono option with me,actually i do have a quality tripod that i bought a few years back but have never used it so i am answering my own question i guess.

Have seen some very nice and ultra light mono's pods that will last many years and also due to be light they can be carried around all the time this must then translate into them being used rather than just 'gathering dust'

It looks like the weather over here in the UK will be nice,so the game plan is getting out and get the shutter clicking

I asked this same question last year, and came to the conclusion that I needed a monopod. I like to take photos while hiking, so I figured a monopod would provide for easy access and a light weight. I use a Manfrotto compact aluminum monopod. I also have a mini tripod for when I want to take video on the trail.

An important thing to remember with tripods and monopods, as with everything else you buy is that you get what you pay for.

@Roscue2,thanks for your input, have just bought a Manfrotto monopod,so should be with me next week,of course a tripod is better but if you dont use it then its a waste of money but the mono version can be closeds down so that i can be in theory carrier with you all the time while you are out with the camera.

Thanks again

Good info, really don't like tripods except for my mini Optix t-12 that I use for shooting on the bench.
After reading about the tri's and mono's. Think I'm going to look into a monopod for this year.

My Monopod arrived this morning, its a nice solid unit so that is the last of my current equipment that i wanted, current have the 2 cameras one as the main one and a nice little one that i plan on carrying with bme all the time,so with the very small bag that carries a couple of spare sets of batteries and SD cards this still keeps the wait down even with the Monopod attached to it.

Weight is kept too a minimum but still provides me with all my vital equipment, the weather forcast for the next week over here in the UK is looking good,so the plan is taking some pictures and uploading a few onto the forum.

Would just like to say thanks for all your help in guiding me on what equipment that i would need, the next step is asking how to use the equipment
