WOT or SEF

I'm still thinking about buying a Souvereign GT.

I also like to buy a bigger coil on this detector, but I'm not sure which one to buy the WOT or SEF 15-12.

I will only use this detector on the wet sand. Beaches over here are not really Iron invested.

Thanks,

Andre

I've owned both and sold the WOT. The 15" x 12" SEF is the coil I now use with my GT on most NJ beaches. It feels lighter to me, and goes a little deeper. Others I've hunted with prefer WOT, but not me.

Had the wot once but found the extra depth i was getting was'nt enough to compensate for the weight of the coil.If you do go for the wot i would use a harness to help support the weight of the detector.Ground coverage is awsome with the wot though.

I will use the GT as a hipmount. Think the weight of the coil will be less tiring that way ???

i bought the wot about 2 month's ago to use with my elite on the wet sand and to be honest i'm not going to take it off. the truth is it's heavier than the stock but thats the only negitive point the good points are you get a lot more ground coverage it's quite a lot deeper than the stock coil without having to overgun it and it's very sensitive to small targets. i payed

I cannot speak of the SEF as I have not owned one yet. May end up getting one. I've read some good things about the SEF. I guess coils are like cars. Some like Chevy, some Ford.

I can speak of the WOT. I run one on my Excalibur II 1000....it has the 15 inch WOT coil. Had it now for over a year. I can say that on dry and wet sand it is a really good coil. I like it better than the 10 inch factory coil. In salt water, it has a habit of being too sensitive and falses unless I bring down the sensitivity. Pin pointing is easy for me with the WOT. I love the coverage and it seems just as light to me as the factory 10. Swinging it in the water is not a big deal for me. I've gone hours and hours in the water swinging the WOT and not get tired. ( I do work out every day so that may have something to do with that!)

As far as depth goes, I read a lot of posts saying that the SEF is deeper than the WOT and others that say the WOT is deeper than the SEF. I doubt that anyone has done a scientifically valid test to prove those claims one way or the other. I know the WOT is deeper than the factory 10 inch but not sure how much. I can say that in my coin garden, the WOT hits my 12 inch silver quarter really hard and the factory 10 inch just barely even sees it. But that does not mean that it would be the same result in other ground conditions.

I'd say flip a coin. Then if whatever you get does not perform as you like, sell it and get the other one. I doubt either one of those coils will disappoint you.

Rick - I previously owned (2) Sun Ray S-12s and neither one of them could get the depth or stability of the 10" x 12" SEF in my dirt (NJ and PA). In the sand, the 12" x 15" SEF ran smoother/deeper then the S-12 as well. The S-12's were light as a feather to swing but the results weren't there for me. Maybe I'll try another one (as well as another WOT) some day.

For us up here in ND and MN we seem to find the S-12 is lighter and easier to swing than the WOT and goes as deep if not deeper. I got two different WOT and tried them myself and had a couple locals try them too and we all felt they were heavy and didn't care for the performance, but we are all land hunters. One of our club members ordered in a SEF 10X12 coil and found the quarters and half's would give a real low tone, so it went back and got another one and that one nulled on half's so he sent it back for credit and got a S-12 to put on his Sovereign and he says it works excellent. One of his hunting buddies that detect fresh water has the S-12 too and loves it also.
Like I say for us the S-12 works the best for our coin and jewelry hunting.
Maybe others that have tried them all will post what they feel works the best for them.

I've been testing several land machines side-by-side now for several months. As mainly a water hunter who uses mostly Excaliburs, I've been searching for my land machine for general hunting. But I'm mostly interested in a good salt beach machine and the 3 I have are Sovereign XS, Explorer XS and Whites DFX.

My main interest was in the Explorer. I like the DFX too, but am leaning more and more towards the Sovereign. My older Sovereign XS has the 8 Coin Search coil and I'm starting to believe it detects deeper than my other machines with larger aftermarket coils! I had an In-Sight meter installed in my Sovereign and can see how the Sovereign with meter could work fairly well as a general purpose land machine, as well as a great beach detector. Plus since I use Excaliburs in the water, using a Sovereign on land kind of makes sense for me!

So, I've been researching Sovereigns and have spoken with several experienced treasure hunters. This is what They tell me... as a beach machine the Sovereign cleans house and that's what they use at the beach. Next, the only coil to use at the beach is the WOT, where some say they dig targets in the sand to nearly 24 inches! Plus the WOT is also super sensitive to smaller targets! I used a WOT once on my Excalibur and found some pretty small targets with it. In the water I found the WOT too big/difficult to swing all day.

I believe the Sun Ray 12 is a good coil, but I've read that the WOT blows it away! That makes sense because the WOT is larger and covers more ground. The SR might be easier to use in the dirt, but at the beach I would get the WOT! The SEF is a good coil too, but from what I hear it may not be as sensitive to smaller gold jewelry as the WOT is. The thing about the WOT is that it's a prov-en coil and has been around a long time. Think about this... if the WOT hits 18-24 inches in wet sand, do you need a deeper coil?
