thinking about adding the WOT 15 inch coil to my exp.xs arsenal alrady have the stealth 5 & 8 inch sunrAY.COILS AND THEY ARE GREAT. MY QUESTION IS HOW DEEP CAN YOU GET A COIN SIZE TARGET WITH THE wot COIL? hONESTLY.ALSO RALPH AT SUNRAY SAID THAT SUNRAY IS COMING OUT WITH SOMETHING NEW IN THE NEAR FUTURE (HOPEFULLY A LARGER STEALTH COIL) ANY QUESSES? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE

Dont know about the wot but was thinking of getting either the 8 or 5. Does the 8 seperate in trash much better than the stock? Which coil do you use the majority of the time?

For beach hunting the WOT seems to do a pretty decent job. But for land I'd spend my money somewhere else. Depth gains over the stock 10.5 inch coil are minimal if any and it's hard to get it stable without turning the sense way down. Several of us have the WOT but none of us ever use it. If you don't have the X-1 probe yet then I would highly recommend that you get that instead.

I guess I'm an enigma then. I started using my WOT as my primary coil - and I'm surrounded by land.
True, the WOT is heavier (about the same as the stock 10 inch), and you do have to turn the sensitivity down (I stay in the 20's) - but it has some real advantages, even on land.
First off and foremost, you can cover more ground. More specifically, it allows you to more thoroughly search an area because of the added radius. Depth speaking, I haven't nailed down any final stats in my test bed, but I am finding a few more deepies. If I was forced into an answer, I would say it gives me another inch or so (I'm digging 6-8" normally around here).
Your final decision on the WOT probably will come down to what you hunt and what you're looking for. If you hunt trashed filled area, the WOT is NOT the answer. If you're working a field and looking for deepies - it'll work just fine and you'll come to love the bigger sweeps.
Just my opinion...

P.S. I agree w/ the above - if you don't have the X-1, it's the first tool needed w/ an Explorer (not that the explorer is hard to pinpoint but you'll just love the probe and it's relative depth)

yes I would get the X8 before the X5, just because you will get more use from it all around.. gets almost as deep as the 10 and seperates better as well as being lighter, I almost always have it on mine.. the 5 is more of a specialty coil when working tight areas and after going through trashy sites with the bigger coils

I think on land if you go real slow with the WOT you may get a bit more depth. But up here in Michigan we are getting 8-10 inches with 8 inch coils and down to 12 inches or a little better with the 10.5 in coil. No one has found anything any deeper yet with the WOT. But maybe we just haven't had a real deepie under the coil yet. Also, I'm not sure that you gain any coverage area with the WOT. It seems to have two hotspots, one on the heel ond one on the toe of the coil. I can't recall having detected any coins with the right and left edges of the coil that I am aware of. I guess I'll have to put my WOT on tonight and check out the sensitivity on the right and left edges of the coil to test out this theory. I don't want to come across like I hate the WOT or that I think it is a bad coil. I have no intention of giving mine up. It's just that in my humble opinion it is a specialty coil that excels on the beach or in trash free areas on land. I bought my WOT thinking that by using the deepest seeking coil and the deepest seeking detector that I would be finding coins 15 inches down in my local park. Basically I wanted to go where no detector has gone before. I have since come to realize that it is a great tool for certain situations and that you need to make sure that the coil is going to fit your hunting style. I hunt mainly trashy parks and heavily overgrown sites so my WOT sees limited action. But when I hit a beach or an old trash free park I'm glad to know that it is in my detecting box. Sorry for the long post but I hope that this helps you out.

I agree, get the 8 inch coil. It is by far my favorite coil.

thanks for all the input guys i already have the srealth 5 & 8 inch sunray coil and i also have the x1 probe sunray has great stuff i also have there treasure pouch and the exp. stand seems i got basically everything sunray makes for the exp.xs all i need now is a stealth 10 inch coil. i think i will hold off on the wot for roight now my basic coil that i use is the 8 inch stealth and i have had good results with it THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR INPUT GUYS

The 15" WOT coil for the Explorer, is more of an advantage to us over here in europe, where we are likely to come accross much deeper material, from roman and anglo saxon and celtic times,it is also an advantage just in case there happens to be a hoard buried deeper, as the WOT will definatly find it, when the stock coil might not, over here in europe roman artifacts can be found much deeper, but on the beach also we are lucky enough to have very deeply buried celtic & roman stuff along with modern recent losses, so yes" its an advantage to have one in our case.

I use the WOT as my standard coil, for high trash conditions I'm ordering the Joey coil from Coiltech, its an eliptical 5x10 inch coil, kind of the best of both worlds, excellent trash seperation with no loss of depth over the stock coil.
The WOT is deeper on land around here, deeper in air tests two. There are sites where I can go no higher than 18 on the sens but other sites where I can crank it all the way to 32 in manual, we got a gold ring to sound off at 24 inches in an air test last weekend cranked to this level and gold sinks in the ground.
We basicly have sand in some areas and clay in others, its useless in clay obviously since even gold will stop sinking when it hits that. But int he softer sandy conditions there are deep targets.
Of course the WOT rules on the beach, it goes deep.
I'm new to the hobby so maybe I have a different perspective, I'll use whats required. If I want to go deep I'll use the WOT. If I want to pick through the trash I'll use the Joey. The X1 is also on my buy list, I just contacted the two dealers for the X1 and Joey coil this week. I'll have both in my bag this time next week, hopefully.

Just bought an XS. What is a WOT coil and where can I get more info about it. Is it offered by SunRay?
Thanks Norm

No it's made by coiltek, look for there add on the main page. If your just starting out with the Explorer you want the Sunray X-1 probe first. No Explorer is complete without it.

Hi Rich:
Thanks for the info. Why is the Sunray Probe better than the Vibraprobe? I am going to Sunray to find info on their probe.
Later
Norm

Can the Sov. WOT be used on the Explorer, or do you need a different version of the coil?
Thanks!
Mark
