Worthy Bargains to look for

Crossbones

Hi, Can I get folks opinions on Inexpensive models that are ferrous/nonferrous that will last even longer than they have already ...I guess that are bargains worth looking for?? Like any older Radio Shack models,or any other makes and models that could show up for sale? (Is a Radio Shack T2 worth getting for 30.00??) They would be mostly used by my 8 and 10 year olds. If this is already covered some where--if someone would direct me to it I would appreciate it a lot! Otherwise , I would love to have a list to work. Thanks, Crossbones

Like anything else in life. You get what you pay for. A cheap detector in the range you are talking about will be frustrating. look at the Ace 250.

Crossbones, if your kids are likely to lose interest in MDing, then I would buy the Radioshack brand. If your kids will most likely not lose interest in MDing, then I would by them an ACE 250. They'll cost you around $250 each. But they're worth the money.

or pawn shops. A week ago I found a Bounty Hunter Fast Tracker that had been broken in the store. The tag said $46 dollars but I offered $10 and got it.(The coil was missing and lower tube broken). I had a spare 8" coil and ordered a replacement tube $19.95 and have a pretty nice back up detector.
My first detector was a Pioneer EX , the Wal Mart version of the Bounty Hunter Quick Silver that I got for $40 at an other pawn shop.
Radio Shack and Wal Mart detectors are Made by Bounty Hunter. I think these are fairly descent detectors if you don't want to spend a lot up front.

I think you would be better of taking all these little $10, $30.. $40.. from here and there, and get a used Tesoro (or Garrett). I also started with a Radio-Shack when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I can say that I dug a whole lot of large ferrous scrap pieces on my dad's farm land. I did got a lot a fun too. They are pretty resistant. But I wish my parents had the money (and the knowledge about hte hobby) to get me a Tesoro. The quality of the discrimination and the depth are simply uncomparable with a Radio-shack and they keep a good resale value in case your son change is mind about MD. I am sure you can found a very good used one for about 100$ to 150$. I think metal detector can be a little expensive, this is why I always bought them used, but I never regret paying for a Tesoro. I did got a bad experience with a used Minelab, but I don't want to debate on brand here.

(and if you get a Tesoro for your son, Dad may use it too..!)

Crossbones...If you decide you want to spend a few bucks on an older top-of-the-line analog 'tector, let me know & I'll pull a couple out of the closet, fire them up & take some pics.

I've got a Bounty Hunter Red Baron 7 the could probably be had for $50 & a Whites 6DB hipmount I'd have to have $75 for. Both plus actual UPS. But I'd have to make sure they still performed first. Both were proven hunters! I've got the manuals & all.

Lemme know...

.............My favorite that packs a wallop but is not expensive is the Compass CoinHustler I or II................it has no discrimination but nulls out on the small iron..................it vibrates over the shallow coins so most youngster would like it!.......Also try the Hays Mark I or II..............................Joe

i would agree with that, i have had most top end detectors but the 2 machines that really paid for themselves 100's of times over were the coin hustler, and the compass 77b. i wish compass were still making detectors today
