Woods walking with the Eagle

The Eagle saga continues. I hit a patch of woods near home today for an hour. This was once a small backwater Army Air Corps base - Jimmy Doolittle and his Japan assault mission flew training missions nearby. This was a bailout/circuit base for B-25's during the War. It then became a small SAC base and finally a prison for minor offenders. Today, it is just a quiet patch of woods where I enjoy taking a bit of air and detecting solo.
I have found IH's there and a few older coins, too, so there was something happening earlier. I suspect a house was there once, but I have yet to learn that for a fact.

Today, there wasn't much to speak of in the way of finds:

You'll see a whopping total of $.11 in mixed Memorials and a little American flag pin, made in Hong Kong. (before everything went over to mainland China, I guess)
Also are the usual suspects: pull tabs from when it was a picnic area, a MasterLock key, some metal 'whatsis' and a UMC "New Club" No. 12 shotshell base - hinting at some earlier activity. Shotshell bases are a good way to help date a site in lieu of anything else. They are nearly everywhere here, and once you get to know the companies and types of embossing, you can date within a decade or two.

The Eagle continues to impress. It was easier to swing today and I doubt now if I'll ever hipmount it. Give me a week with this thing and I'll have little trouble, I suspect. I did find that I can really get hog stupid with the settings and that for most cases, it is just better to stick to the preset settings. I DO like the VDI SENS adjust though. I also learned that in the quiet woods, where few targets exist, I prefer the Prospecting/Relic mode.

A good time was had by all.... well, by me, anyway.
Thanks for Looking!

I have had my eagle since about 94 and it was new when I got it. I have tried to convince myself over the years that I
need something newer, but it continues to hold its own when matched up toe the high dollar newer machines. I hunt presets almost
all of the time. I have a few programs written for it, but have not found the need to experiment too much.
I did get a small coil for it last year and have really enjoyed it. Please keep us posted on your thoughts as
get out more with the Eagle.

Thanks for that information, my friend.
I'm getting the sneaking suspicion that the Eagle is indeed as good as it seems to be, and certainly as good as I might ever NEED it to be.
I'd be interested to hear your learnings on the Eagle over the years, 'guy, and maybe get a handle on some of your programming choices. Maybe you could PM me and allow me to ask a few pointed questions of you?

I've had my Eagle since 91 and it has been a steady performer, Mojave desert, Louisiana and now northwest Florida.

I've had my Eagle II SL 90.5 since 1991. I bought it new from KellyCo. I have 5 coils for it. I also have a DFX but always go back to my Eagle. Excellent machine. Hard to find machines. People that have them, hang on to them.

I like the case. Thanks for the input.

Dave What do you mean Saga????????????? Mic

Well, for me Mick, nothing is ever complete. There is always change and room for improvement. As I use the Eagle, I see that it is a complex instrument and requires some learning. Thus, it's an ongoing saga.

My favorite detector to just have fun with is my old Silver Eagle with a bulls-eye coil. I have wishfully looked at the newer Whites detectors but can't decide if any of the improvements would be worth the cost. A back lite on the screen would be appreciated as my sight seems to be going,LOL. And I'm sure the newer ones would be lighter, but I need the exercise, so I can cross that off. The silver eagle likes c batteries, but I can buy a lot of batteries for the cost of a new detector. Maybe one of you can tell me that the newer detectors have more dept, or more sensitive . Then maybe I could convince myself to purchase a newer model, but then I would have to decide which one. O-well I'm going to grab my old Silver Eagle and go do some dirt fishing,:detecting: and think about it.
