Woods Hunting Mode

New member
I primarily hunt woods (Foundations and Cellars)

I find myself wondering what are the best options in these places.

Spots go from heavy iron to open trash free ground pretty quickly.

Since the CTX came out, everyone seems to just say "Ferrous Coin Combined, open screen" Gonehunting settings. are the only way to go.

I guess my question is, why is the stock coin program with stock discrim not good enough for most hunting situation? Seems like a pretty drastic difference from pretty heavy discrim to no diiscrimination. and yes I have read

http://www.minelab.com/usa/treasure-talk/ctx-3030-target-separation-more-than-a-random-choice

Some swear by ground coin as their only mode. Some say High Trash is the best and ferrous coin falses too much.

I always find myself making it a random choice when in the field and walk away never sure if I'm in the correct mode.

Some say if sens is above 17 used FC, below 17 use GC...etc.

What do you use 90% of the time?

I know many will say, you need to try 1 mode and then hunt the same spot in another.

Ideally I would like to use the best mode the first time and not have to worry about going back over the space area in another.

I honestly think a lot of it has to do with what people are comfortable using. I prefer the "Gonehunting" mode almost exclusively and Yes, I am very comfortable with it. I like to hear what is underfoot rather than look at the display to see if I am over iron, aluminum, shotgun shells, etc, To me, with an open screen, it feels like I am really studying the earth below my feet rather than discriminating out all but the desirable tones which to me would feel like studying Cliffsnote's instead of the actual book . If I am bored I may switch into a stock program of some sort but I feel that I do fairly well considering the amount of time I detect and so I won't mess with what isn't broken.
Of course you are going to get a zillion opinions on this topic. I suppose until I see on Youtube or see in person examples of someone magically hearing a bunch of new potential targets based simply on their modes, I will stick with what I use.

I think about this stuff quite a bit myself and I try a lot of settings. In the end at least so far I seem to end up in FC with an open screen. I listen to it all. This is how I hunted with my Etrac and my SE Pro. It doesn't bother me and when I'm not hearing the drum beat of iron I think something is wrong.

If the iron is super nasty I use the 6" in FC open screen combined. Go slooowwwww. I've pulled stacks of silver and relics in the nastiest crap you ever saw. The Ctx is the only machine that really gives you good odds in this slop

I am fairly new to the ctx, and I hunt in FC Combined almost exclusively, however, I do not use a wide open screen. I blocked out 31 to 35 on the ferrous and 1 to 3 on the conductive. What this does is allow the machine to grunt over iron instead of sounding off on every rusty nail. I like it because I don't end up digging as much rusty iron.

I am experimenting right now with woods hunting. I am finding that just keeping it simple is the best. I made a two tone Ferrous with open screen. set the ferrous line on 30. with either ground coin or ferrous coin(my soil is right on the edge of med/high mineralization). I might try low trash tomorrow. This is really doing the trick for me. I have been using this for all sites i'm going to dig everything at. K.I.S.S.(Keep It Simple Stupid) method in full effect. Since i'm going to be digging everything anyways. why limit the depth and masking with filtering the data into different bins and discrimination? Plus you can hear everything knowing if you're in a hot spot. And you should slow down. Always hunt the woods with NO Discrimination for this reason in my opinion.
