Wobble in Sea Hunter Lower shaft

EasySwing

New member
Got my Sea Hunter yesterday and assembled it. The lower shaft is attached using only one nylon bolt and as such wobbles. Why would Garrett not put another hole for a second bolt to attach the heavy coil / shaft to the connector shaft. I heard about some shaft locks. Where can I get them and what are they called.? The shaft really wobbles as well as the arm rest. My other detector an MXT is rock solid using shaft locks on the lower rod. I took it out for a quick test run and found 3 coins and 2 bottle caps in the wet sand. I ordered a pro stock scoop 9 1/2" wide one today so I can go into the water. It does indeed go deep. Any info to firm up the wobble would be appreciated. Thanks. Marty

Fabricate or purchase a straight shaft is your best bet. You could try drilling another hole to accept another nylon bolt, but I don't think that will stiffen it up much. The unit is heavy already, hip mount it with the straight shaft and you'll be swinging all day.

Good luck

Maybe a new shaft. A simple engineering redesign and simple testing should have uncovered an obvious flaw in its' design. It is too bad we have to "fix" design flaws in a variety of metal detectors right out of the box. I am an engineer myself am just wonder where is R and D testing? Two swings of the unit and the problem is obvious. The detector itself is a fine unit, but the end user should not have to redesign the design and have to spend more money. Just my thoughts. Marty

-The design is fine it is just made out of cheap a$$ plastic. When you get in the waves is when it really gets your attention! Got rid of mine but did make a straight shaft for it. HH

Hey Marty, I have another suggestion that I personally use to stabilize my water hunting shafts. I set the shaft to the desired height and drill through both sides of the cam lock holes. Then I take stainless bolts, with a stainless flat washer on either side and shore it up with a stainless nylock nut. It completely stabilizes the shaft and is especially noticeable in the surf, where a slight bit of shaft play can cause excessive premature fatigue.

Garrett uses the thinner shaft tubing, on all there Detectors, unlike the other manufactures that use a larger tubing. The Garrett's wobble thing is been around for some time.

Since beach hunting consist of long long hunts, your best line of defense would be to do what Mynah stated above

Now you can swing all day and not be fatigue, while looking at all the pretty girls at the beach .
