Just curious. It seems that while hunting CW sites one would run across some caches or at least some loose coins.Just want to know what to look for. Thanks, DBULL

Read this post by d-2 Mostly soldiers were paid with coins and as the post shows if under attack sometimes coins fell from their pockets. Mostly in campsites only a few coins are found if any.

I found a 1853 half dime in Gen. John Hunt Morgan's CSA Cavalry Camp about 10 years ago and Dman found a 1853 half Dime in Morgan's Camp about 18 months ago. These were 2 separate camps 50 MILES APART!!! The Spanish Reales frequently found were used as legal tender also but not used as soldier pay.

What we get down this way is mostly in the way of fattie Indian Heads and a few Flying Eagles. If you're on a lucky streak, you might run across a seated dime. These are federal camps, mind.

In CS camps, you're lucky to find the occassional large cent. I have pulled a pair of III cent pieces from one. To put it pointedly, these guys was po' (poor)!
