Wish I could read the mint mark

Got a text from a friend this morning and said he was on the way to hunt an area where we have found lots of silver. My wife was not feeling good but I got her some medicine and situated her on the couch and she told me to go ahead and hunt (Man, I have a good wife). I told her that I wouldn't stay too long and headed that way. I found my usual share of junk and a few clad coins and knew I had to get home to the wife in not too long. I went over to the area where I found my first seated dime earlier this month and got a coin signal on the CZ5. It sounded a little strange and was not a smooth signal like a normal coin but was kinda blipey. I dug it thinking that it might have been a small piece of jewelry but instead at 5 inches deep I recovered a coin that was bent in the middle like a little taco. The coins in this area always have this black crud on them but we could see enough of the edge to know it was silver. When I got home I used the tin foil and vinegar method and was able to clean it enough to see the face of the coin and a date. It was a 1894 Barber Dime !! The reverse of the coin is totally unreadable and pretty much slick with virtually no detail at all. That is really ashame because the last 1894 S Barber Dime auctioned sold for 1.9 million dollars. There were only 24 minted !!! Here is a picture of the face of the coin and the date.

Wow! Just incredible! May still have a high collector value! Congratulations on finding such a unique coin...John

I always love it when I can get a date off of a trashed coin. Finding anything with a date makes me feel better about a site. Great recovery of what I am sure was a weird signal. Way to follow your instincts.

Cool find! I dug what I thought was a seated liberty dime as the coin is in very bad shape. If I look at it just right I can see 177? either a 4 or 5. Other than that not much else on the coin. I posted it on the Finds Forum it might be a reale instead.Nevertheless it's my oldest coin for sure:thumbup:. Thanks for sharing and HH!

If its bent like a taco chances are its counterfeit(your local coin dealer can tell) years ago found a barber quarter in this condition....coin dealer said it was fake and to prove it had me try to unbend and it snapped in half...due to the rareity of possibilities of such a coin could be. In any case a nice find and yes way back when coins were counterfeited due to the value of a silver coin and what it could buy...

Wow never gave that any thought. I am pretty sure that it's silver but I will check it just in case. The reason I believe it's genuine is because I found it in the same area that I found my first Seated dime a few weeks back as well as several other Barbers being found on the same property. The coin would only be rare if it was an S mint mark and I doubt seriously that's the case.
