Wireless Headphones w/ the Xterra

Since I got the Xterra 705, I have been Rapoo H3070 wireless headphones, especially in the summer as they are light and cool and work quite well. Got them for about $30.

Ya know, I've tried several brands and they are just to flimsy for my type of hunting in the brush. Guess I need to re-engineer a pair of Killer B's to work!! HH Mark

I may have to try a set of them wireless. I'm due to cut the wire in half with my digger. Is the sound somewhat decent with them Rapoo headphones?

Not usually. If it does have a lag, it hasn't been a factor for me. It is not bluetooth which I think gives lags.

Digital technologies will vary. On the plus side, they tend to be immune to outside interference, but they might have lag/delay issues. A digital system needs to sample the analog signal, convert it to digital, possibly compress the signal, transmit it, then decode and convert back to analog at the headphones. The cheaper bluetooth implementations especially can't do that quite fast enough to eliminate noticible lag, especially given the compression steps and protocol overhead.

I've been happy with my wireless Sennheisers that use the proprietary KLEER protocol; if there's any lag, it's so tiny that I don't notice it. KLEER is more or less a just a 2.4Ghz wifi signal; there's minimal overhead, no compression, and just a quick AD conversion at each end, so not much potential for lag. The Rapoo also uses the 2.4Ghz band, probably using an implementation similar to Kleer. (Or heck, it's a Chinese company, it could be an unlicensed KLEER clone, lol.)

For reference, there are also wireless FM/AM-type headphones that are analog and generally won't have much lag, if any; however, they tend to be much more susceptable to static, interference, etc.

Spot on! This is exactly what I've been saying all along.
I've been using KLEER technology wireless phones for several years now and I haven't a complaint. I tried Bluetooth and FM before, and there's no comparison. Bluetooth lags (some more terribly than others, but they all do), and FM is far more susceptible to interference and it compresses the signal too much (meaning that you lose tonal nuance that is important).

I bought several sets of Auvio 33-283 phones when they were still available. If I were in the market now I'd be tracking down closeouts on TDK WR700's. The Sennheisers that Venner has can't be beat for quality of build or sound, but are a bit pricey relatively speaking. And from what I hear the higher end Rapoo's aren't too shabby performance-wise for the money (but you can still find the TDK's for the same or less at this time, and they are better).

Is there an adapter needed with the TDK's? Found a pair for $59. I see an adaptor for Garrett, would that work with a 705?

The Garrett adaptor will NOT work at all. The only adaptor you'll need is a standard 1/8"-to-1/4" stereo adaptor.

I use the TDK WR700 wireless and they perform well on my X70, they tend to distort the tone ID on my DFX, but not to the extent that I don't use them. Great units.

With the TDK 700's what exactly is the adaptor for? Is it for some kind of a sending unit that talks to the headphones?

I believe it's just an extension in case the transmitter doesn't fit in a tight space on some components...

It has a transmitter, And the transmitter has a 1/8" plug.
Your Xterra requires 1/4", so you need a simple stereo adaptor to accommodate the difference in size. That's all.

How do you rig the transmitter to the x-terra? Do you just plug in directly and let it stick out on the left side of the control box?

I use one piece of velco on an open spot on the back of my X-Terra control box and the other piece of velcro on the transmitter to attach them. That works even with the compratively "huge" transmitter for my Sennheisers -- it's 3/4 the size of the control box! -- using two strips of velcro. Easy to take off to change/charge the batteries and stays snugly in place otherwise. Even with a small transmitter like the Rapoo or TDK has, I would recommend doing that and just use a 6 inch audio extension cable to plug it into the X-Terra. That way, you're never going to accidentally snag, bend, or break off the plug on your transmitter -- it's much more expensive to replace than a 50-cent cable from China! (Something like this plus a 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor works fine. About a dollar total.)

I just plug the Rapoo transmitter into a converter (?) plug that changes to a 1/4" plug that goes right into the jack.

I got some Rapoo h3070 head phones today, charged the batteries and hooked it up on the 505. I tried it with the transmitter plugged in right to the side of the control box and it worked and sounded ok. I then tried it with the transmitter plugged into a radio shack inline volume control and the sound was even better. The lag is barely noticable expecially the way I hunt, slooooooow. So far, I have only tried the Rapoo headset with the Coiltek 6" digger coil. Later on I will try them with the Minelab 6" HF coil, my favorite coil, and fairly soon I will scrounge a 10.5" dd mf coil. I think that I am really going to like this wireless thing.
