Wireless headphones for freedom during digging

I just now posted a reply on the Garrett's forum, relative to the Radio Shack wireless headphone set #33-1253. Please see my post on the Garrett forum a few minutes ago for more details. I have mounted the transmitter or "dongle" (why that name?) to the left side of my MXT with two-sided foam tape. This wireless setup seems to be what I've been looking for-freedom from those darn earphone wires. The unit costs $60, plus the 12" double male extender, a $4 double female joint, and a reducer fitting to enlarge the small male dongle cord connector to the larger fitting at the rear of the MXT. The tape, extension, fitting and double female joint only cost about $80 (not counting the warranty). Better, more expensive headphones can be had at the Sharper Image ($99 headphones alone) and probably elsewhere. I got the one year warranty just in case. I hope this may help you, but no warranty-express or implied. The dongle IS FRAGILE, so get the warranty ($8 more?). Reggie

I just got some and tried them out today. They work really good, its so much better without the bulky headphones and cord. The downsides are the phones are kinda uncomfortable and the phones and the transmitter use built in rechargeable batteries But they are well worth the 80 bucks to eliminate the cord.

Wireless headphones are the greatest, IF THEY HOLD UP TO USE IN THE FIELD. The radioshack items are junk, however. Mine lasted less than 3 months, so I'm glad I had the extended warranty. With the refund in check form to use towards purchase of better wireless phones, I have ordered Creative SL3100's, which have a flexible wire connector coming out of the transmitter ("dongle"), so it should hold up better than the switchblade type connector in the Radio shack version. It comes with a 30/60 day warranty, with one year on parts. Both the headphones and the dongle are rechargeable (included charger and batteries). So it's back to the drawing board, but freedom from the detector comes in handy with the deep holes. HH

For those on a limited budget, check your closest Big Lots store. Just a couple of days ago I looked at an outfit that includes the headphones, transmitter, adaptors, and cords. Just add batteries. They are called Freedom phones, $14.95.

I wonder about the quality of the units, but you certainly can't complain about the price, UNLESS they are as fragile as the ones from R.S. Did you buy a set? Were they sturdy in appearance, at least? Thanks for your input.

No, I didn't buy it. I have tried many designs and innovations over the years and I have come to the conclusion that nothing beats the proven combination of quality headphones designed for detecting and a cord. I did put the phones on and they felt good. If someone wants to go the cordless route, this would be an inexpensive way to go. Durability? Depends on how one treats the equipment, I guess.
