WINTER WEATHER!

New member
So, I'm pretty new to this MDing thing and this forum,so what do most of you do in the winter months? Other than discussing old side walks that is.Man i thought that would never end HA HA !

[size=medium]You got that right.lol

That's what you call a too long thread.

What you can do depends, some what, on where you live.

I can hunt most of the winter if I don't get sick and can brave the cold.

I live in Arkansas.

When the ground freezes, I do tot lots.

Frozen tot lots are easier to hunt than frozen ground.

Here is an Idea for making holes in frozen ground.

I call it the Cordless Arkie Barkie.

I keep the manual Arkie Barkie in my car always.

This one only works in wood chips or very soft ground.

Not frozen or wet ground.

If you pin point well, the target will just pop out.

Then all you have to do is pick it up and fix the small hole.

I have never put a mark on a target using either of these.

I fashioned the Arkie Barkie out of a $3 camp fork from

Wal-Mart. Works great.

Happy Huntin,

I live in Tennessee, so winter hunting in not much of a problem. On the real chilly days, that is when I do some research and a good deal of it can be done on the computer. HH jim tn

My main issue is rain. (Oregon coast) We don't get the great turnouts like on the east coast beaches do to the cold water and winter storms, but we have had a lot of shipwrecks on this beach.I am trying to figure out how to water proof my MXT and still be able to get to the controls. My nephew just purchased a house that was built in 1917 .Am going to try hitting that Sunday if the rain will back off a little.

I hunt all year the rain here in Vancouver BC is more than Oregon I go with the Troy X5 all weather sealed has never failed. As a backup the Detector Pro Wader & good rain gear. Dan

I Live on the West cost, Wear gana get some rain I think tomorrow but Im spoiled listing to you guys Wow?????
I cant say to mutch, Mic

i just keep on hunting .i wait for it to warm up to about 60 by 10am..lol!

I live on the wet side of Washington State..and when I say wet we are tallking about stretches of winter with over 40 days in a row of measerable rain. Then maybe a clear day or two and another 30 or 40 wet ones again.
The super saturated soil can be difficult to hunt in. When doing parks, soccer fields or other grassy areas just walking on the fields leaves a muddy trail behind.
Can't complain about the hardness of the soil though.
The wet soil sure beats the buried coins to death however.

in arkie land ya get to hunt 'em all winter!..that's why the discussion went on as long as it did!..i got jealous bein' here in yankee land and soon won't be able ta hunt 'em any more!..that there tabdog fella has all the luck!

Ground will be frozen shortly here in Ohio, that is the bad news.As the season progresses, the leaves, weeds, twigs will die down.A detector will still give a signal, a camera and map will record the spots of interest, stuff that in a folder. Land marks become visible, and a spray can of yellow marker ,for reference points ,can save a lot of digging and missing.. The upshot is very simple, what you can't dig shortly will be dug this Spring..Just watch how many good finds you amaze people with in the Spring time. I am going to grid a field, and dig it this Spring and summer.Wander over to the site of an old Distillery and see if anything can be seen...Don't talk about doing nothing.Too many nothings and life is all over before it even began ..Cordially NAD

Up here in WI, we do what we do best -- drink beer and shovel snow, and wait until late March to get back out :)

NAD,

I like your philosophy!

I used to drink beer, then one day it got sent off to a testing lab. I found out "MY"? mule had kidney problems...Damn, didn't even know I had a mule..One of the last nice days coming up at 50 degrees tomorrow.Promised the wife I'd get the last of the leaves, then head out to a "gambling spot" East side of Newark where a bit of the old canal still shows .A gamble that it is not searched, anything there, or not covered over..Sort of ,you knew it was there, found it still is, and time to check it out.. How do feeder cows and metal detectors get on with each other? Planning on hitting a spot, that has COWS on it, an 1800's baseball field, and an Indian village underneath..Every time I go to the fence, all 30 come over to see what is going on..Wondering if there could be problems.Last time I had anything to do with a cow was when I tried to ride one at a friends farm...Don't know which was more stupid,, flying off a bucking cow, or paying twenty five dollars to wrestle a black bear.Cordially Nad

life is like a passenger train rolling through a crossing!..if ya don't jump on it,there might not be another one!

After reading all of your posts, and TABDOG showing some of his digging arsenal, i was wondering what everybody uses for digging tools, bags, storage, etc. i guess anything used for MDing.Does anybody have any pics.
I use an MXT with the stock 950 eclipse coil, whites bullseye 2 pin pointer. For the beach i like to use my little green plastic scoop that i bought at a gold panning supply store.I'm a little inexperienced at this stuff so for coins i use a cheap little garden spade.I'm working my way into this slowly.
