Winter Mding at the ocean

I'd like to start mding in the surf and I'm kind of curious about the proper protective wear to buy to keep myself dry and warm? Anybody have any suggestions on any good websites and what to look for... ratings, mat'l etc. I live in the north east and it gets pretty cold. Any info would be greatly appreciated.....HH Jack

A good set of waders are probably the best option, as long as you don't take a rogue wave. If you can afford it, you might look into a dry suit and a fleece liner. It will definitely keep you warm, but won't breathe and they are very expensive. But if you take care of it, it should last quite a few years. Wet suits are cheaper but you may get cold, even in the best ones.

Waders are the cheapest way to go. Boot foot are the ones I like..and most do have the steel shank but you have to be aware of it when swinging. Or you may want to watch for a drysuit come next summer, the best time to get them on ebay. I've got a few on there and spent 340+...85....250.....on different suits ....all new with tags. Them I do like more then the waders, but they are a real pain to get into, I'm a old goat so I have hard time bending......secret is to buy one size larger then you need...I'm a large...I buy Xtra large now, makes for a better experance. This is a MSD900

Thank you OBN. That looks like a nice setup. Is this something that you put on once you get to the beach? HH Jack

Yep, not to bad if you get the one size larger...Used by the Coast Guard, Good for 6 hours in 32 degree waters...

Another alternative is to get he thickest neoprene waders you can and put 'smart wool' underwear on as the first layer and then use polar fleece or wool. You will get to make the choice if you want boots attached or a 'sock' wader. With the sock wader you can put any kind of shoe on you like but it's a bit more susceptible to leaking. If you get a rogue wave and take in a little water you'll still keep warm. You won't drown in waders if you get dumped. It's an old wive's tale. Read and research it on the net and it will dispel the perpetuated misinformation.jim
