Winter ground heaving

The picture shows classic winter ground heaving. The raised area with snow on top is five inches higher than the ground in front of it. This ground returned to level a few days after this picture was taken. Any object in the ground is subject to being moved up or down by this phenomena. It is uneven and unpredictable. This is one of the reasons that old coins may be found shallow and newer coins may be deep. Hope this helps explain it.

After most of the snow around here melted, i noticed wierd shallow kinda ditches some a few feet long in a few places around my property. Mostly in shady areas away from direct sunlight. You explained it perfecly, they're upheavels. Though they have not yet returned to ground level. Probably gonna have to tamp em down.

At first, looked like those dam rat moles came out of hibernation but i think you're on to something with the upheavels. Maybe they're tunnels had something to do with it?
Lets hope it upheavals the coins too.
