Winter Blues

Howdy Y'all from a Texan living in the land of the North. I am new to MD, with a GT-AX 550, and chomping at the bit to get out there. I am now doing research, reading, and lots of cold walks in the woods. With maps of the area from the Orland Park library and help of Google Township I am finding very interesting prospects. Winters up here are just to long. Are there any other MDers in the Orland Park, IL area doing research too?

Welcome aboard. You have a dandy detector to start out with. I have a field test on that one at losttreasure.com if you want to check it out. Hope your weather breaks so you can get out. Will be looking forward to your success and pics of your finds. Good luck.

Welcome aboard bud, I was looking into the 550 when I was shopping for a new machine, I finally bought the GTP but as I remembered I was impressed with the 550.:garrett:

Welcome to the forum!:wave:This is a wonderful community and a great place to share info.:garrett:Feel free to ask for advice at any time. Welcome to the hobby of metal detecting!:detecting: You've got a great machine for a beginner or seasoned treasure hunter. I've never used that 550, but I've heard nothin' but great things about it. Best of luck to ya! Keep us posted! Happy Hunting!:)

Thank y'all for the kind words and encouragement. I received the 550 as a gift not long enough before the cold set in. I am quite impressed with the detector, and found a nickle in the first 5 minutes of use in the back yard. I have been hooked ever since. I have found a few old foundations in the cook county forest preserves in IL. and just wonder what I will find. One of the finds in in the thickest of woods and is without a trace of beer cans or bottles or paths about. Isn't semi-retirement grand.

I hunt a lot of old foundations and you never know what you'll find out there. I found by rejecting the first notch I ignore most of the nails but will still pick up larger iron items. Found haymower blades, a horse shoe, an ax head and old tools with that setting.
