Winter blues and headphones

I'm going nuts! I got my Explorer in December and have yet to get outside to hunt with it. I feel like I have shortened the learning curve immensely simply by reading everything on this forum. In fact, I will be disappointed if I don't do well on my first day out. I have also read my manual and extra book that came with it three times each. I have done all kinds of air tests indoors, and feel like I've got a pretty good handle on things. I fully expect to bring home some silver that first day out. But then, I always have been an optimist. With the ground still froze, and 5-8 inches of snow forecast for tonight, it looks like my suffering will continue. One question; I know there is a difference in headphones, but how much more are you really going to find with a more expensive pair? Has anyone tested different sets of headphones to find out if sounds could actually be heard in one set that could not be heard in others? I plan on using the headphones that came with my unit, but I certainly don't want to miss treasure because of inadequate headphones. Would that indeed be the case? Thanks for your response! Doug

I like the Koss headphones. I picked up a set of Koss TD-61 at Wal-Mart for $ 19.00. They sound very good with my Sov and LST. Have not compared them to top of line headphones though.

You'll be all right using the Explorer headphones for the time being, they actually produce more volume than some of the other headphones you can buy. I would just start looking for a good headphones upgrade, there are a few to choose from that just smoke you ears away their so loud and that's with non-amplified phones.
Louder volume is more about how you are alerted to signals, the louder the iffy signals come through your phones the more likely you are to be alerted by the signal. One of the reasons you get improved performance using high grade phones is because the ear cups themselves cut down a good deal of external noise caused by traffic, surf, wind, and other distracting noises allowing you to hear signals better.
So don't lose any sleep over phones right now, just take your time and compare some of the better phones on the market so you can make the best informed decision on which phones will be right for you.
Three things that you should consider are loudness, comfort, and price. The biggest trade-offs are going to be between loudness and comfort.

Do those headphones have volume adjustment capabilities like the ones recommended for detectorists? The reason I'm asking is that I would like to get new headphones but I'm reluctant to drop 50-100 bucks on them. All the ones I've ever seen in K-mart etc are for walk man or disc man machines where volume adjustment is not possible on the headphones themselves. Its a drive for me to get the closest Walmart but if they have them....I'm on the way!
Thanks.

No volume control on them. I also got the Koss TD-60 at Wal-Mart for $ 10.00 and they work great also. I like there sound.

The ear cups on the TD-60 are a little small. The TD-61's fit better for me.
