Williams type III cleaner bullet

Found one this weekend that was in good shape. I read that every 10 rounds a Williams type III cleaner bullet was shot. Can some one explain to me how this works? If fired does the bottom collapse or is the groove filled with grease or cotton to help with cleaning the barrel.
Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,
Sometimes when you dig them they still have a zink disc(the disc is concave or convex however you look at it) between the bottom plunger and the base of the bullet. When it is fired the bottom plunger flattens the disc which when flattend is a little larger that the bore of the rifle and it then scraps or cleans the riflings on its way out.
