Will the 70 find micro jewelry

Flyguy

New member
Guys.. thinking about buying a 70. Will this machine find the really small gold micro jewelry like chains and small earrings on the beach - stuff that "nugget detectors" will miss?
thanks,

Sorry I don't have a picture for you but I found a small gold circle. Probably a piece of an earring. It is as big around as a pencil and pretty thin. You could fold it in you fingers. I was using the 7.5Khz 10.5" dd coil in the salty wet sand. Thats pretty small.

No, it will not find stuff smaller than what a dedicated VLF nugget detector will signal on.

However, IMO micro jewelry and small gold nuggets do not share the same characteristics. You do not necessarily need the high frequency VLF gold detectors to find micro jewelry!! When you are talking small gold nuggets, generally speaking you are referring to weights that are less than a gram ...say .1 to .5 grams in that neighborhood. The X70 equipped with the HF elliptical coil will do just fine for micro jewelry. One thing you have to keep in mind is that even though the high frequency (50-70 KHZ) dedicated gold machines are noted for their sensitivity to small gold, that capability only extends down 2-3" on the really small stuff. Apples and oranges About all that a dedicated nugget detector is going to do is quadruple the amount of foil you dig for very little gain on the good stuff. Maybe there is a ton of micro jewelry on some beaches but I have never found that in my area and yes I have hunted beaches with dedicated nugget machines. Dry sand forget it, the amount of small foil will drive you insane in no time!!

Personally, I would not waste my time hunting for that sub .5 gram jewelry. If it happens to signal and comes up and stays in the scoop by happenstance fine but, otherwise I'll take a pass. ;)

How small do you want to go? Ring is just a hair under 1/2" in diameter, 1/8" at top and 1/16"at the shank. It was an honest 3" deep, using the 5x10HFDD on my X-70. By the way this is my 3rd baby ring but, alas no big rings.

About 6 weeks ago or so I got this very small gold earing in a park area. It was down about 4" in dark almost black soil. I was using the stock coil on my X-70. I also have the 6" DD high frequency coil and it's a killer in trashy areas.

Tom.. thanks for your reply. This is really helpful!! You mention hunting beaches with dedicated nugget detectors and not finding much. Have you had the same experience with machines like the X70 (different type of detector) with the same experience? If that's the case, apparently it's just not there - unlike the Fisher folks might lead you to believe. However, if that small jewelry has a diamond on an earring stud it might be worth the time. What do you think?
Do you use the X70 segmented discrimination on the beach or go all metal?
Do you think these sand scrapers/levelers that the crowded beaches use at night to clean up the cans and tops are taking out the micro jewelry?
Do you have or can you direct me to a small hole scoop manufacturer for the really small stuff?
Lots of thanks in advance,
Flyguy
