will my 8 inch minelab coil reach coins consistantly in the 8 inch depth range.

I would switch over to the 10" coil because the 8" coil will not see the coins on edge at eight inches deep in my dirt. You don't want to miss one..

Slow sweep speed
Sensitivity at least on 12:00 o'clock position
Volume set all the way up on machine
Moist ground conditions
No target masking
Sweep direction - if the coin is on edge, it takes a very lucky sweep direction to get it.
The Sov is one of the deepest detectors out there. Good luck !!

That the Explorer 11 won't find a dime at 8"s on edge with the 8" coil. I am just about to get me a new Exp 11 with the extra 7.5" coil but I don't need a machine that won't get a dime at 8"s on edge with a 8" coil. . I don't need that. Is that what you guys are saying. I won't own a machine that won't get a dime at 8"s on edge period. Are you saying that you got to use the big 10" coil to get that dime on edge at 8"s. I love hunting in the iron and the trash as that is where the good stuff is. Maybe I have made a big mistake here. I know I don't post here as I don't have the Exp 11 yet so I would appreciate it if I could get a reply. I can spend the money on something else. Thanks Jerry aka Tinfoil

Can you tell me which machine you have now that will find a dime on edge at eight inches? I have tried with discrimination set at 2, three different X-5, one Tejon, and they don't even beep on the dime on edge at eight inches. The Explorer with the 8" will give a weak signal, but the 10" locks in good.

My MXT,(3.5"X6" coil) fisher CZ6a (5"coil) ,7apro (5" coil),CZ70 (5"coil), X5 (5"coil) DFX (3.5"x6' coil) SidewinderMM *" coil have not tried the 4" probley not. You see I live in a place with very litte mineralization in the ground. Down here if you ain't digging 8 to 12"s you might as well go home and watch the game on TV cause you sure ain't going to get any coins unless they are clad. The first thing I do is take a new machine to my test garden if it don't hit the dime it goes stright to the factory to get souped up and tuned to the coils. When I get it back if it don't hit the dime it gets sold period. If you are not hunting in the iron and trash down here you might as well go home too. Most targets that are any good down here are 8 to 12,14"s down. I don't like hunting with 10" coils I have them but don't like using them. The good places I hunt a 10" coil is usless because of the trash and the IRON. Later and thanks for the reply Jerry aka Tinfoil

with a 5 inch coil can detect a dime with the right ID down to 10 1/2" well I don't think you need an Explorer, save your money, how about you show me this machine next time I am in Louisana next month Thanksgiving week. And maybe John Saldivar can join us.

Hey Guy,
I'm sure it will unless there is a dense trash layer above 8 inches that will mask out the coin. If you have a dense trash layer at 5 inches and then there is a silver dime at 8 inches, you can forget hearing the dime.
I have found pennies at nine inches with the coil.
Also, the coil may detect a given coin at 8 or 9 inches, but the signal that comes back may or may not make you want to dig it. The coin orientation in the ground (vertical, 79 degrees, etc.) will affect the signal. Also corrosion will probably affect the coin signal.

How well the stock 10 inch coil does in high iron and trash.. Even the X12 coil is impressing me in iron.. Iron is where its at! I hunt cellar holes almost exclusively.. While the 8 inch will grab up some stuff the bigger coils miss in the highest concentrations, they dont leave much.. Ya gotta go slow in the iron though

And I know ain't going to blow andy smoke cause he knows he will get the machine back. I called him earler today and asked him to put the dime on edge at 8"s told him how to set the machine up it. His mineralization is about like mine, Zip, around 50 on my MXT. Anyway we get some great depth on our machines. He buried the dime at 10"s on edge, sen to 25 iron mask-16. Signal was a faint signal but read 25 to 30 cond. and a ferious of 10, which probley should be ok due to the depth of the coin and it being on edge. I am not that familiar with the machine yet but I have read the manual at least 5 times and Andy Sabichs book over 5 times. I spent alot of time learning the XLT and The DFX so I am a very patient person and I think the Exp.11 is not going to be that hard. Anyway I figuar those are the readings he should have gotten and I consider under the circumstances they are the best ones for the conditions with the dime on edge freshley buried. Now I really got the answer I wanted. So now I guess I will get him to send me a new Exp.11 . I should have done this along time ago instead of wasting everyones time. Thank you all for your e-mails amd help I really appreciated it. Later Jerry aka Tinfoil

my super trashy sight has gave up some good coins with the 10.5 coil but been stingy lately. i havent tried the 7.5/8 yet as i thought i would lose depth but like i said for some reason all the good coins are within 8 inches and havent found any deeper. i will let post how i do with it...guyt.
