Will it work? Sod Plug Cutter.....

Made it out of a cut-down caulking gun & a 5" piece of 2.5" exhaust pipe. The idea is to stomp it into the ground, pull the gun out containing the plug, and squeeze the handle.

Will it work? Too wet to try this week.

I don't know if yours will work..but a fellow here uses one from a golf course..the plugger for holes and it works great. Looks sorta like what you made in a way.

Another Great Idea from the mind of IndianaSmith, very cool. The weather in our area is so nasty,I've already got cabin fever and it isnt even christmas yet .

Cold 27 F here today in Syracuse, NY. We had some snow fall, and a lot of icy conditions...I should have gotten out over the few days we had of sunshine, but had the grandson visiting...We only get to see him about 1 or 2 times a month, so I enjoy spending the time with him...I like the design Smitty, and I have wanted to make something similar but with a piece of exhaust pipe as the cutter for the plug.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hunting,

BH- I actually made another one, like a pogo-stick with the same "cup" set-up on the bottom. No caulking gun, but a thinwall conduit handle, a 5/16" solid rod thru it to "plunge" the washer in the cutter end. I welded another large flatwasher on the top, so I can invert it once I cut the plug, & "bump" the handle on the ground to spit the plug-out. I'll post pics this weekend of it.

Here's the "gun", took pics today.....worked like a charm

hey i was thinking of tring a roof core cutter it looks like a sod cutter. shaped like a " T " bottom opening is 2" and it 9" long and has a plunnger on top to push out the core but u would have to be accurate to hit the coin

I'm not familiar with that tool, is it operated in a drill? Another guy suggested something similar to a holesaw, but I wouldn't use anything with "teeth" for fear of damaging something valuable. Granted, damage is always a risk, that's why I doubt I'd use this anywhere other than a manicured lawn where sod damage needed to be held to a minimum.
