Will detector work at beach?

KansasDon

New member
I am going to the New England states in a couple of weeks. I already called the airline and they said I could carry on my metal detector.

So my question is will the Garrett 550 work on beaches or am I wasting my time. I have never had the opportunity to try detecting on a beach before and am wondering if the 550 will work or not.

Thanks in advance for any comments. Don

I don't know about the 550 personally, but it doesn't get any easier than beach hunting.
As long as you don't mind diggin' a couple dozen tabs. LOL

You are not wasting your time taking your MDer to N.E. There are many great places to MD. If you are in the city look for sidewalks or pavement that has been removed. Awesome spots.
I know the Ace 250 does ok on the beach. I have found quite a few rings on the beach. and bracelets, and ear rings, and belly button rings, and coins, and tokens, and lots of matchbox cars.

My wife is from Bridgeport CT and talks of the beaches the boardwalks and the years of people going to the shore for fun. THe biggest waste of your time would be to take your detector and then not use it - go the beach man!

If your detector has BEACH mode, use it. Do not hunt in ALL METAL. You will get a lot of falsing from minerals in salt sand. If it doesn't have beach mode use coin or jewelry mode.

My advice in NE is skip the beach and head for the woods and farms. The oldest finds in the forums come from the NE States.

My Ace 250 worked great at Ocean City, Maryland last week. The CXIII did also. I cranked the 250 all the way in the dry sand, and it worked until the wet sand which made it chatter quite a bit. The CX did great in Beach mode on dry sand.

Watch out for the Beach Booty Monster. It comes by each morning digging up the sand about 2" down and laying it on a conveyor belt that sifts the sand of anything and neatly lays it back on the beach from it's hind end. They usually travel 4 in a row, one slightly behind the other, and chew up a 40' path of sand, eliminating any surface booty. Mine had John Deere tattoo's on it's head. Do your hunting extra early or in the evening.

i never saw one of those at the beach! I am sure it is intended for trash and not for booty. Are the operators even watching for the "good stuff"?

Imagine being the operator of one of those things and having to clean it out each day. You could toss your detector in the trash!

The nearest thing I can think of is the guy who has to empty the car vacuums at the car wash. The ones here dump the car waste over the side of the retaining wall at the car wash. Ive found coins and earrings there....

Yeah that's a tip I've forgotten to mention here. Thanks for tweaking my brain. A car wash here used to dump their's in a pile behind the building and I used to hunt the piles and find stuff, but they don't do it anymore. I'd like to find where the city dumps their street sweepers. :)
