I'm thinking of getting my wife a detector she and the grand kids can use. I have to keep yhe expence down. I'm looking at the ace 150, tesoro compadre, how are the bounty hunter low end modles and fisher compare to the 2 i like is a compadre better than a ace 150.
No question about it..... the Compadre is the way to go for the money you want to spend on a detector. If you can afford to spend around 250.00 on a detector, I can highly recommend the Silver
Hmmmm ... haven't used an Ace 150, did have an older Treasure Ace 300 that did not ID well at all. I've read the newer Ace series is much improved.
If it were a detector I'd be teaching the grand kids to use, I'd lean towards a Compadre or Silver.
If it were my wife who was maybe interested in detecting, and spending time with the grand kids, I'd get her the Ace 150. Why? She does not necessarily like to understand how things work, just wants what ever it is she is using to work and give her information she wants. She gets frustrated if she feels she needs to learn theory to understand the controls.
I like the Compadre and other Tesoro beep and dig detectors a lot. I have not considered getting one of the Ace series for my use.
To get best use of even the single knob Compadre, you need to have a basic understanding of target conductivity and what setting the discriminator does to the detector's ability to see different targets. Not hard to learn, but if the expectation is to turn it on and have it tell you if you found a quarter or a nickle or something that has a chance of being jewelry but is probably trash, then the Ace does that. Notching most trash is straight forward to do and you don't need to understand target conductivity to do that either. The Compadre and Silver find metal very well yet require more thought added to the process to understand what you are detecting.
My opinion is that you need to first consider the user and that consideration will lead you to a detector choice that is appropriate.
Cheers,

I recommend Compadre but if you think she needs target ID, I'd go with an F2. I like them better than ace series.
Faster recovery speed, Bigger Display and no BOING BOING
Agreed, if you want target ID, go with the F2, or possibly look at the Teknetics Alpha which is in your price range also and is supposed to be a good performer for the money. My personal opinion, for what it's worth, go either with the Silver or Compadre. You get much better build quality and a lifetime warranty, excellent performance, and I feel the Tesoro detectors have superior discrimination over the other detectors. ID detectors aren't 100% accurate as most of us know and we tend to rely on them too much sometimes causing us to miss good targets that may not fall directly in one of the ID notches.
Good luck with your choice and happy hunting.............................
