WHY ??

What reason or reasons decided your purchase on "YOUR" metal detector.

Not what would you like, or want.. But why did you buy the one ,or multi units you purchased..

My latest a F-70 was a kind of ... settled for unit..That has proven to be one of the best detectors I have ever owned.
I had a unit I disliked extremely, and a fine Dealer Sponsor here had the New F-70 ..He made me a deal I could not refuse.
I have never regretted that deal. The F-70 works better than I could have hoped or imagined.

That is my story and I am sticking to it.. What's your story ?.

Good post Elton.

Glad your F-70 is working well for you. For me, it was the Sovereign GT. The reason(s): I noticed many of the users of this fine detector locating wonderful old coins in "hunted out" and left-for-dead areas by others. In speaking with these hunters they guaranteed me that IF I learned the machine and learned it well, I would most certainly be rewarded with items missed by others in well beaten areas. After purchasing the Sov GT, everything that users mentioned to me was 100% true. I mention "it was" the Sov GT because unfortunately I needed to sell it. ( different subject for a different time) I can say I was well pleased, severely shocked and pleasantly surprised by the items found (mostly old coins ).

1st machine was garrett gta -1000 which i bought new from a friend who was an experienced hunted..it was a very good unit for a 1st machine but eventually lost interest.... 2nd machine was whites 5900 di pro black box i got at a yard sale for like $75 .... this unit resurrected my interest in the hobby continues to impress me from time to time... 3rd machine was sov gt i bought new for all of the reasons earthlypotluck posted... most of my oldest coins came from the gt in farm fields... i went thru the typical learning curve with it but man once i got use to it it produced some great deep finds... 4th machine was a used excal just so i can water hunt with a unit simular to the gt.... i still have all of these in my arsenal.... the only one i dont use is the gta 1000... the others get used as conditions require... most impressive the 5900 has the ability to find the tiniest of tiniest targets which is real good when those targets are gold..... and the gt has on occasion found targets deeper than i would have thought possible. ....

How do I start. I been detecting for a lot of years. When I started I had a used BFO. That was when you found silver every place you went. I hunted play grounds at schools and parks before they called them TOT LOTS. Them old detectors were very heavy. I hunted in the water before they had waterproof detectors. Gold and silver rings by rhe hand full. Over the years my body started to do other things, like get older. I went to a light weight detector so I can still get out. I have mostly Tesoro. I dont care about digging deep holes to find a penny. I mostly hunt for jewlery. So that is tot lots and sports fields. I still like water hunting. Other than that, I read what you all find and hold down my chair. Have a good day... KEN FROM IND.

I was gonna purchase a Cibola and when I entered my selection at Richard's Backwoods sales, it would not accept my order or my card. I sent several e-mails and was never answered. I was sitting on the john:rofl: reading a treasure magazine given to me for my birthday. The first two pages of the mag were an ad for the new White's MX5. The more I read the more my lips drooled. It's now my favorite detector. Still have no idea as to the problem, as I had several detectors and a coil from Richard. :whites:

As no single detector can do it all,i use a selection of machines that covers about every type of detecting that i do,research and homework is my main mantra when choosing a detector/s,neither am i brand loyal or what i call the sheep heard instinct and what i mean by that you will see the very latest must have machine so i will join the heard which many folks do.

I use what works for me,my research and homework model has never let me down, also one of the main criteria that i never budge from is i never buy a totally new machine for a minimum of 12 months to see what possible flaws or design faults that may appear.

Detectors are not cheap things,i also want the right detector for me and never in a hurry, one of my machines is the original green T2,many new update models have come out since the original launch but as yet i cannot see any advantage to me of these expensive upgrades.

Of course this is just my personal opinion on what works for me.

Elton, glad you are enjoying your F70.

I actually got rid of the newest detector I bought . It was a great detector but I am now exclusively locked into different tones and screen ID . The old body is getting older and I no longer want to dig the amount of garbage I used to . Depth and big coils are not of critical importance to me now either . I am happy with what I have , even though they are not the latest and greatest . What I have are tried and proven and I know their capabilities and limitations just like I'm starting to realize what mine are . I will admit I had a lot of fun over the years trying out different detectors .

Congrats on your new F70 Elton , I'm sure it will serve you well .

I been detecting since 1973 and have used many different detectors as I want one that works the best for me. One of the ones I wanted and did get one was the Teknetics Mark 1 when they came out and hated it because it was different and had a learning curve, but once I spent the time to understand it this detector was awesome. Now in 1996 I wanted a Minelab Sovereign XS and at that time you had to walk in to a local dealer as Kellyco was the only one able to sell mail order which has been changed now. I did call Kellyco, but no one could give me any answer about it as there was no dealers around me and the closest was 800 miles away in Montana. With the help of many on the Find Forums and Guvnor himself I decided I wanted one and became a dealer in the Minelabs just to have one. At first I thought it was a mistake after seeing one and trying it out the first time, but as I was told to learn it and don't give up. Well I did and it is by far the best detector I have ever used for coin detecting and this detector has impressed me along with so many others I went up against comparing signals and showing how the Sovereign can and will find coins others miss. Some tell me it is a iron signal, but the Sovereign says it is good and it is, now some tell me it is a deep coin signal I may not get, the Sovereign nulls and I say iron and when dug it is iron. I have a display from a park I was told had been worked out and this guy told me if I could find 1 old coin he would believe the Sovereign was better. well I got over 75 old coins in the 18 hours I had detected it with only maybe 10 new coins. This impressed him and it did to me also. He then bought a new Explorer as they had just come out, then got a Excalibur and both sons got a Explorer also after they seen what there dads Minelabs can do.
The secret is getting to know them and what works the best for you. The Explorers to me were good, but not like my Sovereign can do and to me the E-Trac is the one that impresses me me more. Had a Fisher F-75 and liked it too once I learned it a little, the Shadow X5 also was a good one along with the Tejon of Tesoro. The F-70 never cared much for it, but some like it, got a new Makro Racer I been using and my first impression was not too good, but spending the time to learn it my impression is getting better as this detector is too hot in factory setting and by turning down the gain has helped a lot to quiet it down and seeing too is picking out coins in with trash, but it too has to be learned a bit and then I will decide if it will be one to keep or not as the weight is sure better then my Sovereign GT is, but don't think it can or will replace my GT, but would be a great detector for back up or to use when I want to check out a area quick like.

I had been interested in Metal Detecting for many years but Life kept getting in the way.

Three years ago my Brother In Law stopped by for a couple of days and introduced me to metal detecting. He recommended the Sovereign GT. So I made the purchase and for a couple of months thought that I had wasted a bunch of money as I could not understand what the machine was telling me. Bought one of the meters that Ron puts out and the light at the end of the tunnel became visible. I have since purchased a second GT just in case that I ever need it.

I live about 30 miles from the beach and I wanted to be able to get in the water without hazarding my GT to the water so the Excalibur II became my machine for the beach.

I also have an Old Compass Relic Magnum 7 that a friend gave me. No instruction booklet so it just sits and whines about not being used.

An ACE-250 is always on standby for youngsters and or adults who want to give detecting a try. Purchased it just because I wanted something that I did not mind letting others use.

I sometimes think that I would like to try a different machine but then I take the GT or the Excal out for some detecting and those thoughts go away.

I started out using bounty hunters. Then I wanted a Deleon and started cling dealers. Most of them said for the money the would check out the xterra 50. So I found a used one and then had two xterra 70's and a couple 705's. I have to admit I like the 70 better than my 705. 70 seems to run a little more stable. I really like the 705 but I like the 70 better.
