Why the MXT is still my favorite all around detector..

Phil

New member
I returned to a park tonite where I hunted the other day with my T2. The bottle caps plague my T2 as well as my X-Terra 50 but with the MXT I hunted 30 minutes and dug 3 qtrs, 6 dimes, and 4 copper memorial pennies. No pulltabs, no can slaw and no bottle caps. Tonite was unusual because with the MXT I normally dig a lot of nickels and I found none in the area I hunted. I have 2 machines I will probably never get rid of and one is the MXT. Of all the machines I've owned the MXT has the highest coin to trash ratio when clad hunting. That is especially true for nickels, I dig less trash going after nickels with this machine than any other I've used. 7yrs and nothing tops it yet.

Phil,
Do you use the trigger forward feature on the MXT to rule out pull tabs? Maybe you just have a good ear with the MXT... My wife has one that she's still learning on and has her share of pull tabs with screw caps and other stuff too.. With my DFX I just stopped trying to reject pull tabs and look at every pull tab as a possible ring.. Nickels and pull tabs make me happy only because I can't discriminate them all out with so many types and fear losing rings. I can't hear the difference between them with ether unit yet.. What your secret with then MXT? George

I set the disc just below nickel and use the trigger fwd. On my machine, shallow nickels hit at 20 on the VDI and deeper nickels drop to 18. Newer tabs hit at 22-26 for me so there isn't much trouble with them. Nickels lock on solid and don't really jump around. The only time I have any trouble is on the tail of the old beaver tail pulltabs and the metal piece on pencils that hold the eraser as they both give a 20 VDI. I don't dig many of them because the pinpoint signal is not as strong on those trash targets as on a nickel. A shallow nickel just screams when I pinpoint it and the trash 20VDIs don't. I have gotten an odd piece of trash now and then that fools me but I don't get fooled by most trash. I also don't use the stock coil much and prefer one of the DD coils or the 5.3 Elipse. My most used coil is the 6x10DD. When I'm hunting an area with older coins, I use the relic mode with the disc control set the same place for the tone break so all the coins give a high tone. Hope your wife likes her MXT as well as I do mine.

My sentiments actually on the MXT. Right now I'm trying to buy an Xterra 70 but, I will never get rid of my trusty MXT.

Phil,

Thanks so much for your great and detailed info! This information will help me and my wife with learning the MXT a lot!! George

Hi Phil:
The MXT is a great machine, no doubth it.
I'm hearing alot of talk now about the F70 and the F75
giving the MXT a run for its money. Still, I'll hold on
to my MXT. Its been great in the field and the learning curve
is not really a problem. Just too heavy whereas the F70 is about
a pind plus liter.

Regards
RR

Here is a link regarding the MXT. You may find the information useful.

Robert, Thanks for the link! I'll have a look at it.. At this point I'm trying to read as much as I can about it.. I'm sure I find some useful information there! George

Heck, if your just clad hunting why not go with the ACe 250. Its a very undervalued metal detector. $212.00.
Of course the MXT is great and you'll get much more depth with it.
Just an thought.
RR

Robert,
I'm sure the ACE 250 is a fine unit. I been running a DFX for almost 4 years now and when the wife took interest in the hobby we decided on the MXT 300 for her because of the learning curve is less than the DFX. We actually are hunting for jewelry and picking up clad as we go kind a gravy I guess I would say.. But also have a interest is some prospecting in my state so that's the reason for the MXT.. It's the wife's and we picked it up a little over a month ago.. Two detecters if enough for us for now and think we would be leaning toward unit three to be a water unit in the future.. Thanks! George

but I've compared signals with my T2 and an F75. The F75 gave a better signal on an 8in dime and a 10in qtr than my T2. The MXT isn't for everyone. It is pretty chatty when you turn it up and some people don't like that. As for the weight, I've used an Explorer for years so the MXT is a lightweight for me.LOL

how about the f2?..lot of folks like it too!

(h.h!)
j.t.

When the MXT gets too chatty you just turn it down.
I wish I could have done that with a few of my last girl friends!
There was no control knob though. OH what a pig I am!
RR

Well the MXT will probably do you well for prospecting. Apparently the
F75 and the F70 are giving the MXT a run for the money. But if your already familiar with Whites then
stick with them. They make good machines. One of these days, if I can find a dealer out my way, I want to
borrow/rent the F75 and F70 and take them out for the day.

Good luck.
